Summary

The University is committed to improving its energy efficiency and has focused on making steady progress through various operational improvements and energy-related retrofits each year. We work to optimize our energy efficiency, improve our carbon footprint, and promote a sustainable future. The DTE Energy SEM program is designed to help us take our energy management program to the next level. As part of the DTE Energy SEM program, participants will help to develop a formal energy management policy, participate on the campus energy team, implement the campus engagement plan and, ultimately, foster a broader understanding of the costs of energy and the many ways that individuals and departments can help to improve our energy efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint.


This position is designed to support and coordinate the campus engagement plan and is particularly focused on the Energy Management Toolbox (EM Toolbox), the Excel-based repository for all energy related calculations. The successful candidate will possess advanced MS Excel skills. Additional responsibilities include supporting the Planet
Blue Ambassador (PBA) program.



The SEM Student Assistant coordinator will work with Facilities Operations team members on energy and sustainability projects. SEM Student Assistant will also join other faculty and staff as members of the campus Energy and Sustainability Team. These position is temporary, from Feb 1, 2023 – Aug 30, 2023. This position will pay $15/hour and the estimated work hours will be ~10 to 20 hours/week. This work requires an on-campus presence and compliance with the university’s COVID vaccination policy is required. Student should have ability to come to the campus as required.

Responsibilities*

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Collect and summarize energy consumption information;
  • Review existing Toolbox and understand all items for each building;
  • Review all Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) for each building;
  • Utilize advanced Excel skills to update ECMs and EM Toolbox information for each building on a monthly
    basis
  • Develop energy savings calculations;
  • Develop implementation strategies;
  • Develop cost estimates for each BOMI & ECM;
  • Write business cases for implementation of specific ECMs that include costs, savings, and payback analyses;
  • Develop measurement and verification method for each BOMI & ECM (if applicable).
  • Participate in building walkthroughs;


Secondary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Engage faculty, staff, and students in becoming Planet Blue Ambassadors (PBA) through online or in person trainings.
  • Organize events and encourage campus-wide participation in the program.
  • Develop reports as needed on program metrics and impact.
  • Develop relationships and communicate as needed with internal and external partners. Foster collaborations and partnerships for program activities and development.
  • Attend student team meetings, Energy and Sustainability Team meetings, and SEM meetings;
  • Summarize your activities each month in a formal report.

Required Qualifications*

  • University of Michigan-Dearborn student;
  • Recommendation from UM-Dearborn faculty or staff;
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel Skills
  • Availability to work from February 1, 2023 to August 30, 2023;
  • Ability to organize and track data effectively within established software;
  • Ability to work productively in a collaborative, team oriented environment;
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills;
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word;
