Position Description:

A postdoctoral research scholar position is available in Dr. Yuliang Xie lab at the Roy J. Carver Department of Biomedical Engineering. The initial appointment is funded for one year from the date of hire with the possibility of reappointment contingent on performance.


Research of Dr. Xie lab includes airway epithelial cell culture system, tissue-biomaterial-device interfaces, and in vivo application of biomedical devices. As part of the lab’s research, a post-doctoral scholar seeks to develop cellular/tissue/organ-based models in study of pulmonary physiology. This position requires experimental approaches including 2D/3D cell culture, organ culture, hydrogel matrix, cell-material-device interface, microscopic imaging, and other cell/molecular biology. A post-doctoral scholar is responsible for the design of experiment with the PI, collecting and analysis of research data independently, troubleshooting experiments independently, and training graduate students and research assistants independently. A post-doctoral scholar will also be responsible for the preparation of manuscripts related to his/her work.


A post-doctoral scholar will work in a rich environment in which faculty, post-doctoral fellows, research associates and graduate/undergraduate students regularly interact and conduct collaborative research studies. Therefore, communication and interpersonal skills are desired.

Education Requirement:

PhD in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, biology, or a related discipline.

Required Qualifications:

  • Laboratory experience in molecular and cell biology

  • Good communication and writing skills in English

Desirable Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with expertise on either of the following fields



  • 3D cell culture system with hydrogel matrix

  • Pulmonary/respiratory physiology

  • Cell material interface

  • Organ-on-a-chip and bio-microfluidic devices

  • Implanted biomedical devices
