TUTOR II (TEMP) Active Learning Assistants (Math and Biology)

Job Description

Summary

Active Learning Assistants (ALAs) is an OAS initiative to support active learning in the classroom by embedding peers to help facilitate learning activities and to hold out of class sessions. ALAs at Dearborn is designed using research and best practices from Learning Assistants Alliance.

Responsibilities*


Work directly with small groups of students to facilitate discussions and interactive activities during lecture, recitation, or lab sessions
Attend weekly content preparation sessions with faculty
Participate in ongoing training seminars to learn and reflect on effective pedagogy
Hold additional help sessions outside of class that include coaching students on effective learning and study strategies
Respond to student, staff, and faculty inquiries via email
Maintain timesheets and other required records
Learning Assistants do not grade
Act as an example of student success

Required Qualifications*

  • A high achieving upper-level student, or recent graduate
  • Familiarity with SI and MLC goals and objectives; willing to complete next 2-day training
  • Cumulative GPA of B or better
  • Instructor recommendation
  • Responsible, dependable, honest, and mature
  • Friendly, patient, and sensitive to a diverse student body and faculty
  • Able to work independently to carry out duties
  • Knowledge of and adherence to professional, ethical and privacy standards of UMD

Desired Qualifications*

*Graduation from high school, minimum of 24 academic credit hours in undergraduate coursework, and good academic standing as a University of Michigan-Dearborn student.

*Applicants must have already successfully completed the course they wish to support.

*Course grade should be in the high B/A range.


*Excellent verbal and written communication skills


*Consistently display a welcoming attitude and provide constructive encouragement during interactions with diverse groups of students


* Growth mindset and desire to improve your own knowledge and skills
