Duties and Responsibilities

 

The Academic Success Coach is responsible for developing and coordinating workshops to assist students seeking assistance in various disciplines. The Academic Success Coach is also responsible for coordinating the delivery of workshops throughout the semester and summer months. The Academic Success Coach is also required to work closely with the Director of the Center for Learning, Academic, and Student Success, Academic Success Coach Coordinator, faculty, CLASS Instructional Lab assistants, student workers, and tutors.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities  

  1. Assists students in identifying, developing, and implementing learning strategies and study skills.
  2. Assists students in developing self-efficacy by identifying and overcoming obstacles that may be impeding academic success.
  3. Works with students to learn strong time management, organizational skills, and other skills necessary for student success.
  4. Motivates students to practice self-regulation and take ownership of their academic success.
  5. Conducts academic coaching through individual or group sessions and workshops that will help students assess their own performance and develop academic success plans.
  6. Develops and delivers academic success workshops on various topics throughout the semester and summer camp programs.
  7. Proctors written, online, and make-up exams.
  8. Provides academic coaching (tutoring) to provide students with the academic support needed to ensure student success.
  9. Supervises, develops schedules, and reviews timesheets for student workers (tutors) as needed.
  10. Researches, evaluates, and recommends the purchase of student success technology programs and services.
  11. Assists the Director in developing and implementing programs such as peer mentoring, student success workshops, and summer camps on various topics surrounding student success strategies.
  12. Performs additional duties assigned by the Director of the Center for Learning, Academic, Student Success.

Required:

  • An A.A. or A.A.S with related post-secondary coursework in addition to suitable and demonstrated job-related experience.
  • Experience in higher education specifically in the areas of student support, success, retention, and academic success.
    Specific orientation and job training are provided to employees by Laredo College.
  • Ongoing Professional Development.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

  • Must be proficient with personal computer usage, presentation software, and technology, development of academic student success programs/workshops, and troubleshooting technical issues. 
  •  Must have effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.    
  • Must be self-motivated with a strong work ethic.  
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with students, parents, and faculty. 
  • Must be committed to the community college philosophy and mission.

The Academic Success Coach is supervised by the Director of the Center for Learning, Academic, and Student Success.

Physical Requirements 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a standard office environment. Work-inside a well-lighted and air-conditioned area most of the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

Special Conditions

Immediate supervisor may assign other duties. May be required to work outside regular working hours, as needed. May be required to work at a different college work site or campus as needed.
