MPMOD & MIP Post-Award

The Department of Molecular & Integrative Physiology is seeking a highly competent and motivated Research Administrator at the Intermediate or Senior level.  This position will split equal time supporting the Director of the Michigan chapter of the National Centers for Metabolic Phenotyping in Live Models of Obesity and Diabetes (MPMOD) and supporting department faculty on post award accounting activities.  Once training is completed, partial remote work is an option.

Responsibilities*

  • Coordinate, attend and prepare minutes of the quarterly meetings of the Center’s Internal Steering Committee.
  • Assist the Center Director with financial planning and analysis.  The candidate will have oversight of the income and expenditures, budget preparation, financial reporting, account management, purchasing, fee-for-service reimbursement and general financial transactions according to the policies and guidelines of the University of Michigan, contract negotiation, and interdepartmental resource management.  They will act in an advisory capacity on financial planning and analysis policies and procedures. 
  • Assist the Center and Core Directors with the conduct and compilation of biannual surveys of internal and external investigators to determine customer satisfaction and query the user base for their current and projected phenotyping needs. 
  • Assist the Center and Core Directors with the preparation and submission of annual progress reports to the NIH, including detailed statements of fee-for-service charges, expenses, and program income.
  • Assist the Center and Core Directors with the preparation and distribution of newsletters to UM and outside investigators.
  • Assist the Center and Core Directors with the documentation and distribution of phenotyping protocols and ensure that all necessary agreements with investigators, including Material Transfer Agreements prepared through the University’s Office of Technology Transfer, are signed and up to date.
  • Assist the Phenotyping Core Directors in the preparation of service contracts detailing the specific phenotyping work to be performed, fee-for-service charges and obligations of both the Michigan MPMOD and the requesting investigators.
  • Work with the Core Director and/or staff of the MPMOD to facilitate and monitor the online applications for animal phenotyping services and the timeliness of depositing all Phenotyping Core data into the national Coordinating Unit (CU) phenotyping database.
  • Maintain records for equipment inventory, service, and replacement.
  • Coordinate with the webmaster to keep the local MPMOD web site up-to-date and synchronized with the national MPMOD Consortium’s web site managed by the CU.
  • Provide administrative support to the Center Director as assigned. Place orders via the procurement system as necessary.
  • Coordinate travel, hosting, and reimbursements for the Center and Core Directors, and schedule meetings as required.
  • Work independently and regularly exercise judgment in the application of policies, procedures, and methods, while always maintaining the strictest of confidentiality.
  • Monitor sponsored project portfolios including monthly reconciliation, annual FSR & UG reports, budget allocations, taking corrective action (journal entries, PARs, contacting suppliers), disseminate reports to faculty, quarterly meetings with faculty, review of terms and conditions for new awards, establish sub-accounts,
  • Meet regularly with faculty to discuss sponsored project portfolio
  • Interact with ORSP, Sponsored Programs and the Sponsor as well as the SSC, and members of the post-award team.
  • Attend/participate in departmental/school/college and University opportunities such as RAN, etc.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor degree and experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong proficiency in the use of computers, including applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and M-Pathways.
  • Experience in working in post-award grants management.
  • Strong multi-tasking ability and demonstrated organizational skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with dependable attendance record.
  • Attention to detail and strong follow-through skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in communications with multiple units both within and outside the organization and excellent writing skills.

Intermediate:

  • 3+ experience in research administration

Senior:

  • 5+ experience in research administration

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience with grant writing and application process.
  • Experience with iLabs software.
  • Ability to analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities. 
  • Experience in P-Card reconciliation and travel/hosting expense reports.
  • Experience in working with external organizations.
  • Experience with project coordination for multiple project managers.  
  • Reasonable knowledge of medical and scientific terminology.
  • Experience in working with faculty on grant preparation
  • Experience with M-Pathways, eRAM, eRPM, M-Reports and Business Objects

Work Schedule

This is a full-time 40 hours/week position.  Initial hours may be 8-5 or 9-6 until employee has been trained.  Remote/Onsite work is an option once training is completed.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
