Overview:

The Multifunctional Equipment Integration Group in the Building and Transportation Science Division (BTSD), Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified candidates to fill a Postdoctoral researcher position. The work in this group supports the U.S. DOE Building Technology Office and other customers by developing state-of-the-art building equipment for energy efficiency, equipment to grid integration, and improved life cycle climate performance.

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting, coordinating, and reporting complex research assignments related to energy conversion systems including:

 

  • Advanced heat and mass exchangers
  • Waste heat recovery devices and systems
  • Heat pumps
  • Thermal and non-thermal drying processes
  •  

    This will involve the synthesis/fabrication, utilization, and characterization of new materials that enable the development of novel heat exchangers, waste heat recovery systems and novel HVAC&R systems and components. The successful candidate will develop experimental setups, conduct experimental campaigns, perform thermodynamic analysis and system modeling, analyze results, and prepare technical documents and research publications. The work will involve interacting and collaborating with researchers from universities, national laboratories, and private industry.

     

    Required Qualifications:

    • The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field completed within the last 5 years.
    • The candidate should possess the necessary background and experience in (a) innovating thinking and problem solving, (b) thermodynamic cycle modeling, (c) thermal storage materials and applications, (d) experience with the design and operation of experimental thermal/fluid systems, design of experiments, and knowledge of various mechanical systems and instrumentation (e) good knowledge of fluid dynamics and heat and mass transfer, and (f) knowledge of various mechanical systems and instrumentation.
    • Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills are required.
    • A have strong background in project management with a proven publication/patent record.
    • Experience with heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment is also a plus.

     

    Expertise in one or more of the following areas is of particular interest: (a) heat exchanger design and its associated disciplines (heat transfer, fluid flow, and coupled heat and mass transfer), (b) design and modeling of reverse Rankine (vapor compression) and related thermodynamic cycles, (c) design, measurement, and standards related to residential and commercial equipment, appliances, and water heaters, (d) materials relevant to non-vapor compression heat pumps, (e) phase change materials, (f) membranes, (g) cost reduction and design for manufacturing, (h) advanced manufacturing methods, (i) controls of building equipment, and (j) other technologies relevant to developing future building equipment that is efficient and grid-interactive.

    Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
