Postdoctoral Associate in the MagLab High B/T Facility

University of Florida

Job Description

Classification Title:
Job Duties:

The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab) High B/T Facility in the Department of Physics at the University of Florida invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate in Experimental Condensed Matter – low temperatures and high magnetic fields. Experience with experimental low-temperature techniques, especially with the operation of wet dilution refrigerators and with high magnetic field experiments, is preferred. The ideal candidate should also have experience with demagnetization cooling techniques and instrumentation development for research at low temperatures. Primary duties of this position include supporting experiments at temperatures down to 1 mK and in magnetic fields up to 16 T, extreme environments which enable user research of novel quantum states and materials, and that require the simultaneous operation of dilution refrigerators and superconducting magnet systems. The successful candidate is expected to be actively involved and contribute intellectually to science projects by external users and to in-house projects led by MagLab scientists. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required for successful collaboration within the team-user network and for disseminating the results in presentations and publications.

The position, which will be supervised by Mark Meisel and co-supervised by Lucia Steinke, is potentially renewable for continuation within the UF policies governing postdoctoral appointments and contingent on the continuation of grant funding.

We encourage applications from candidates that contribute to the diversity of our programs, the MagLab, and the University of Florida.

Expected Salary: The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, and the compensation includes a full benefits package.
Minimum Requirements:

Ph.D. in Physics. Experience with manually operated wet cryogenic systems and handling cryogens.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with cooling methods below 1 K and operating superconducting magnets for performing experimental research. Experience with demagnetization refrigeration and novel probe design/use at ultra-low temperatures while in high magnetic fields.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

For full consideration, applications must be submitted online. Click on Apply Now at the top of this posting. Applications must include: (1) a cover letter, (2) full curriculum vitae (including publication list), (3) Research Statement and (3) the names and email addresses of three references must be provided. After initial review, letters of recommendation will be requested from the references for selected applicants. For more information, please contact Professor Mark Meisel . The Search Committee will accept applications until the position is filled and start reviewing materials as soon as possible after January 31, 2022.
