This position will be a technical lead in the research, design, development, and implementation of highly operational workflows/pipelines, applications, HPC modeling, and data curation/provenance capabilities focused on analyzing extreme weather and climate events in the Western US within CW3E. This person will advise the CW3E Management team of concerns and provide solutions related to operational pipeline/workflow implementation and best practices related to domain science-relevant computing.

In addition, the position will be part of, and possibly coordinate, technical efforts across multiple CW3E partner institutions: Army Core of Engineers, California Nevada River Forecast Center, NOAA, Sonoma Water, and other partners at Universities and agencies. Provide technical leadership to management in the recommendation of new hardware and software technologies both locally, at national HPC centers, and in future CW3E center-wide activities.

The position will require extensive experience with HPC computation, numerical modeling, data curation/provenance, and operational workflows/pipelines to assist with CW3E's Near Real Time (NRT) West-WRF guidance system for AR recon and Forecast Informed Reservoir Operations (FIRO), new forecasting tools, and operations initiatives. This position will independently research, develop, deploy, and maintain new technologies to aid CW3E research efforts.

Furthers UCSD educational goal by teaching next-generation undergraduate/graduate/postdoctoral students best practices and techniques developed within CW3E for new research and applications capabilities focused on extreme weather and climate events in the Western US.

Gives technical presentations to associated research and technology groups and management. May represent the organization as a team at national and international meetings, conferences, and committees.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer / Computational / Data Science or Domain Sciences with computer / computational / data specialization or equivalent experience. Master's degree preferred.

  • Advanced knowledge of HPC / data science / CI. Demonstrated experience running HPC domain-specific scientific software and related packages and working with domain science experts.

  • Highly advanced skills, and demonstrated experience associated with one or more of the following: HPC hardware and software power and performance analysis and research, design, modification, implementation, and deployment of HPC or data science or CI applications and tools of large-scale scope. Demonstrated knowledge of designing, deploying and maintaining domain science pipelines/workflows in an HPC environment

  • Demonstrated ability to regularly and effectively communicate with unit-level management. Can effectively communicate with external partners, SIO / UCSD IT, and San Diego Supercomputing Center.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various organizational levels and external research and education audiences. Demonstrated ability to document and visualize complex operational HPC workflows/pipelines.

  • In-depth skills and experience in independently resolving complex computing/data / CI problems using introductory and/or intermediate principles. Advanced ability to think creatively to recommend action steps or strategize solutions.

  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines. Seeks out solutions to problems independently.

  • Advanced experience working in a complex computing/data / CI environment encompassing all or some of the following: HPC, data science infrastructure and tools/software, and diverse domain science application base and demonstrated experience with national lab HPC resources.

  • In-depth ability to successfully work and/or lead multiple concurrent projects. Demonstrated research and technology project leadership and management skills.

  • In-depth experience assessing a broad spectrum of technical and research needs and demands and establishing priorities, delegating and/or leading the development of solutions to meet such needs.

  • Demonstrated advanced experience in one or more of the following: optimizing, benchmarking, HPC performance and power modeling, and analyzing hardware, software, and applications for HPC / data / CI.

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and advise senior personnel at Scripps and collaborating agencies and institutions in deploying domain science workflows/pipelines. Ability to coordinate internal and external partners to ensure progress toward goals.

  • Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies.

  • In-depth experience with scripting or programming languages, scripting environments, and/or applications (R, NCL, Matlab, Python, PostgreSQL, Fortran, Bash, Python, Conda, Linux, WRF, WRF-Hyrdo, CESM, Unix system administration tools, MPI, NetCDF, HDF).

Pay Transparency Act Full Salary Range: $87,000 - $202,600 Annually

The University of California, San Diego is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Expected Pay Scale. Placement within the Expected Pay Scale is determined by internal equity, relevant qualifications, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
