Position Highlights A Postdoctoral Research Associate I in Cardiovascular and Respiratory physiology is available in the University of Arizona’s Respiratory Neurophysiology laboratory (PI E. Fiona Bailey). The applicant will have opportunity to work as part of a team on a 5-year NIH/NIA funded phase II clinical trial focused on the potential for a behavioral intervention to mitigate cardiovascular risk in adults 50+ years with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). In addition, the applicant will have time devoted to the development of their independent research agenda, with greater flexibility afforded to those who successfully acquire adequate funding. The successful applicant will have opportunity to work in a clinical trial facility in the College of Medicine and to develop expertise in assessments including flow mediated dilation, pulse wave tonometry and MSNA. The position is available on a full-time basis for one year in the first instance, further extension is available based on performance.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Technical skill acquisition and subsequent data collection.
  • Design and implementation of independent research proposals, protocols, and procedures.
  • Assist with the analysis of research data in collaboration with Biostatisticians and faculty.
  • Preparation of scholarly manuscripts and final study reports to communicate results of the research to the funding agency (NIH/NIA) and to the broader scientific community.
  • Oversight of data collection by research core staff.
  • Analysis of human biospecimens including endothelial cells by various analytical approaches.
  • Attend and give seminars under the direction of the Principle Investigator.
  • Research grant application preparation and submission.
  • Ensure that all research performed under their direction is in compliance with University of Arizona Institutional Review Board, local, state, and federal laws, policies and procedures.
  • Mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completed PhD or MD/PhD degree with a background in systems physiology including cardiovascular (endothelial or vascular biology), respiratory or autonomic physiology.
  • NRSA eligible (US permanent resident or citizen).
  • First-hand experience with institutional review board protocol submission and management, preclinical studies, and statistical analyses.
  • Proficiency with standard computing software, physiological data analysis programs, and biostatistical software.
Preferred Qualifications * Experience in the operation of clinical and basic science research protocols. *Experience working directly with patients or human subjects. * Experience with human subject neurophysiology and/or respiratory physiology protocols/recording techniques. *Problem-solving and organizational skills. * Record of achievement evidenced by first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals and a strong interest in a multidisciplinary approach to experimental and clinical research. * Previous mentoring experience.
