Job Summary

The ODMA Multicultural Student Success Specialist I will assist the Multicultural Initiatives manager to provide outreach and intervention services to the African American, African, Black students enrolled at SLCC. The Student Success Specialist will provide this support through regular contact with students by phone, email, online messaging, virtual and in-person conversations when possible. Through regular contact with the students and collaboration with student-facing departments at the college, the ODMA Specialist I will monitor and support the academic, and social success of this cohort of students. The ODMA Specialist will play a very critical role in providing feedback to the Manager of Multicultural Initiatives/Multicultural Student Success Coordinator.

ODMA Specialist I will also assist with Multicultural Initiatives programs i.e., Brother 2 Brother, Transition to Adult Living (TALS), Somas Mas, Multicultural Student Council (MSC), as needed and/or requested.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

• Provide individualized support and success Cultivate a friendly, supportive environment and address students’ individual needs and help them to overcome any obstacles preventing their success, with the assistance of the Manager as needed.
• Provide proactive one to one student conversations that acknowledge the unique needs of Multicultural students. Engage in ongoing individualized outreach to students based on academic risks, case management, MySuccess etc.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all relevant policies and procedures.
• Develop, maintain and enhance relationships with colleagues, advisors, staff and faculty to support student enrollment and success.
• Refer students to appropriate campus resources, groups, services, workshops, and activities based on their individual needs.
• Coordinate any receptions/orientations, interventions, and success and retention efforts, example: Brother 2 Brother and other Initiatives, as needed.
• Conduct monthly individual meetings with students to assess progression of academic, personal, and professional goals with an emphasis on connecting students to campus resources.
• Facilitate group communications via email and online text messaging to engage student cohorts, respond to individual questions within 72 hours of initial contact.
• Any other related tasks, assigned, designated, requested or required

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 1 year of part-time related experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates or two-year degree equivalent
  • 6 months to 1 year of full-time related experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
  • Effective communication with diverse and non-English speaking populations. Second language preferred. Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite-Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Canvas, etc.
