Cornell communicators share a mission to enhance and preserve the university’s brand and reputation as a top research institution and a leader in higher education, and to support and promote critical programs that serve the university’s teaching, research, and public engagement mission.

Communication services are carried out through a matrixed organizational system in which University Relations houses the departments of News (Cornell Chronicle), Media Relations (pitching and servicing media requests), Brand (cornell.edu, multimedia production, brand management and governance), Strategic Communications (communications plans, key messaging, social media management), and Cornellians (digital alumni publication).

Communicators in colleges, schools, and units regularly collaborate with, and consult, University Relations departments. University Relations serves as a partner and resource for all college/unit communicators.

The Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based ScienceS and Education (CLASSE) studies particle beams and accelerators, photon science, particle physics and the early universe, and serves students, the public and scientists from Cornell and around the world. The research missions of this laboratory are in many respects unique in the world. The Communications Assistant serves the scientific mission by providing communications and marketing support to strengthen the unit’s brand identity and internal cohesion.

Primary responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: 

  • Develop content, layouts, formats, updates, and assist in monitoring the Department’s social media accounts. 

  • Serve as a Social Media Ambassador, working closely with University Relations (New Media) to ensure adherence to best practices, including consolidating accounts to maximize reach and engagement.

  • Continually review and edit social media pages and posts to catch bugs, correct errors, and typos, fix broken links and add new resources to relevant pre-existing pages. Collect and analyze communications and marketing metrics. 

  • Write, edit, proofread, design, improve and maintain communications and marketing materials for CLASSE (ie. stories, brochures, letters, online ads, e-mails, web text)

  • Work closely with the Director of CLASSE Communications and University Relations to ensure adherence to best practices, including consolidating accounts to maximize reach and strategy. 

  • Communicate and support DEI initiatives for growing diversity in our staff, graduate student, undergraduate student, postdoctoral, and faculty populations.

  • Collaborate with other communicators and DEI staff in the university to learn, share, and implement best practices.

  • Take photos and/or video for use in CLASSE communications and marketing. 

  • Assist in creating and editing designs/promotions/images in Canva and/or with Adobe Creative Suite • Prepare presentation slideshows and add interactive media forms to the website. 

  • Promote, facilitate and support special events, meetings, and activities. 

  • Coordination of shared and private spaces within all departmental buildings.

Required Qualifications:

Associate’s degree and 2 to 4 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination. Proven organizational and time-management skills. Working understanding of strategic, brand, and multimedia communications. Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to work with diverse audiences in group and one-on-one settings. Strong commitment to quality service, collaborative decision-making, teamwork, and communication is essential. Experience that demonstrates sound judgment, creativity, management, and problem-solving skills. Ability to write quickly, clearly, and concisely in collaboration with others. Ability to work with partners in Brand, Media Relations, News, and Strategic Communications staff on internal and external branding and messaging, multimedia storytelling, and crisis prevention/management. Experience generating, reporting, writing, editing, and/or assigning stories, multimedia projects, and/or social media content that advances a unit’s mission and goals.

Preferred Qualifications:

Some background or prior experience in DEI training. Experience with creative applications such as the Adobe suite. Experience partnering with administrative or creative communications teams and external vendors. Some knowledge of research in the field of natural sciences. Ability to communicate in multiple languages. Working knowledge of university policies and procedures.
