Gilbert Seldes Multimodal Postdoctoral Fellow (Two-Year Postdoctoral Fellowship)

Job Description

Gilbert Seldes Multimodal Postdoctoral Fellow (Two-Year Postdoctoral Fellowship)

The Annenberg School for Communication is accepting applications for the Gilbert Seldes Multimodal Postdoctoral Fellowship. Fellows will work with Annenberg faculty, staff, students, and researchers on projects relevant to multimodal scholarship. They will also be involved in ongoing projects and may participate in a variety of opportunities across campus (research meetings, discussions, presentations, and screenings). Responsibilities will include developing their research and publication program, providing mentorship and programmatic support to the CAMRA Fellows program, and presenting research in a public forum such as the Screening Scholarship Media Festival. Preference will be given to newly minted PhD students from the University of Pennsylvania who have a strong background in film, dance, graphic arts, and/or other multimodal formats.

The Seldes Postdoctoral Fellow will be paid $60,000 per year, including individual healthcare and dependent coverage, and receive a $3,000 research and travel fund per year. The two-year fellowship will begin in August 2023. All interested candidates should submit a CV, cover letter, writing or portfolio, and three letters of reference to Maura Reilly-Ulmanek by Friday, March 1, 2023. The chosen applicant must have successfully defended their dissertation by June 30, 2023.

This postdoctoral fellowship is named after the founding dean of the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. Gilbert Seldes was a decidedly multimodal scholar, someone who, as summed up by the New York Review of Books, not only published books of cultural criticism but also “wrote columns for The Saturday Evening Post and Esquire, adapted Lysistrata and A Midsummer Night's Dream for Broadway, made historical documentary films, wrote radio scripts, and became the first director of television for CBS.”

Primarily a graduate school of communication theory and research with approximately 20 full-time faculty, 80 doctoral students, and 25 postdoctoral fellows, the Annenberg School for Communication is a vibrant, diverse, and close-knit community of scholars at the forefront of engaging today's media landscape and its impact on the major issues of our world.

The University of Pennsylvania values diversity and seeks talented students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds. The University of Pennsylvania is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. Candidates are considered for employment without regard to race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, creed, national or ethnic origin, citizenship status, age, disability, veteran status, or any other legally protected class. Questions or concerns about this should be directed to the Executive Director of the Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Programs, University of Pennsylvania, 421 Franklin Building, 3451 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104-6205; or (215) 898-6993 (Voice) or (215) 898-7803 (TDD).
