Executive Director of Training and Leadership Development

Job Description

Consistent with the Christian mission and vision of the YMCA of Middle TN, and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, under the direction of the COO, the Executive Director of TLD is a strategic leader who can adapt quickly and work well in a variety of settings. S/he will work with all business unit subject matter experts to develop and deliver training that will enhance a culture of learning, encourage skill development, and bolster staff retention and career progression. The Executive Director of TLD will collaborate with all areas of the organization in order to assess needs, provide opportunities, invest in the growth and development of our employees and move our operational plan forward. This position will provide leadership and resources to ensure quality training and leadership development initiatives are integrated into the overall business strategy and align with organizational goals and objectives.


Essential Functions:

  • Model the YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility
  • Model and put in practice behavior that supports diversity equity and inclusion
  • Identify strategic training needs across functions and departments and design and develop a comprehensive training curriculum that will positively impact the following: employee performance and work satisfaction; equity and inclusion; improved staff competency (e.g., customer service survey scores); leadership development
  • Create and deliver scenario-based learning, hands-on functional and systems training, focusing on functional (job-specific) content for participants
  • Develop and communicate an integrated training calendar for key initiatives; plan, organize, and direct a wide range of training events (in-person and virtual)
  • Maintain knowledge of operation processes for ongoing assessment of the training process
  • Responsible for compiling data analytics involving any training and development metrics, information, and trends in order to provide a reliable, transparent single view to track progress, determine effectiveness, and pinpoint areas of focus for continued improvement and that will provide insight to facilitate strategic decisions and actions to impact operational effectiveness
  • Serve as a learning and career development mentor and guide for Y staff in their professional development; partner with State Alliance Director of Training for Y-USA training events
  • Passion, enthusiasm, and commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA
  • An enthusiastic personality and the desire to serve members, volunteers, guests, participants and staff to create a culture of service
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross functionally, collaborate, and convene working groups across all levels of the organization
  • Strong understanding of current and emerging trends in the training and leadership development field and best practices
  • Must be detail oriented and highly organized with the ability to work under pressure, manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines
  • Expert presentation and training facilitation skills, both in-person and virtual
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Must present a professional image and possess conflict resolution skills, and demonstrate sound judgment and initiative
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other software programs; ability to use most office equipment required
  • Must be able to travel to multiple locations and able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
  • Minimum 21 years of age; four-year degree or a combination of life experience, work experience, and education that demonstrates the abilities to carry out the job functions and responsibilities
  • A proven track record of developing, implementing and conducting successful training programs is required; previous work experience in a training leadership position or a similar role in a corporate environment is beneficial.

Certifications Required:

  • Before start of 1st shift: New Hire Orientation training
  • Within 30 days of hire: Introduction to Listen First
  • YMCA Organizational Leader certificate preferred or within two years of hire
