Job Summary
 

The Director of Resolution Services/Deputy Title IX Coordinator, is a full-time administrative staff position reporting to the Executive Director, UChicago CARES (the Center for Awareness, Resolution, Education and Support) and indirectly to the Associate Provost for Equal Opportunity Programs/Title IX Coordinator. The Director is responsible for the strategic direction of the University’s resolution framework, which includes leading the development of alternative resolution process options and investigation and resolution by a hearing panel under the University’s non-discrimination and harassment policies. The Director works primarily on resolution options for complaints made against faculty, other academic appointees, and postdoctoral researchers, and alternative resolution for students, and partners with Employee and Labor Relations, as needed, on reports and complaints against staff. The Director supervises one Associate Director, the primary investigator, in investigating and facilitating resolution options. The Director also works closely with colleagues within EOP to create and maintain a holistic approach to prevention, education, support, and response in support of all members of the campus community, consistent with the University’s compliance efforts related to non-discrimination.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic direction of the University’s resolution framework, which includes alternative resolution process options, investigation, and resolution by a hearing panel.

  • Lead the development of a holistic resolution framework, which includes alternative resolution process options, investigation, and resolution by a hearing panel, for resolution of reports and complaints alleging discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct, including Title IX Sexual Harassment, under University policy for all members of the campus community. Alternative resolution refers to a variety of flexible process options to resolve allegations of discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct, which may include reporting, supportive services, dialogue, conflict coaching, shuttle diplomacy, facilitated conversation, and restorative practices. Resolution process options will vary depending on the needs and status of the parties and the type of report.

  • Facilitate alternative resolution process options available under the University’s non-discrimination and harassment policies (as primary facilitator), which include alternative resolution (shuttle) and additional process options as developed.

  • Supervise Associate Director, who serves as primary investigator, of complaints alleging discrimination, harassment, or sexual misconduct against faculty, other academic appointees, and postdoctoral researchers.

  • Conduct investigations of complaints made against faculty, other academic appointees, and postdoctoral researchers alleging discrimination, harassment, or sexual misconduct, and as needed, those against staff (in partnership with Employee and Labor Relations), under the University’s non-discrimination and harassment policies in compliance with federal, state, and local non-discrimination laws (e.g. , Title VI, Title VII, Title IX).

  • Coordinate hearings of the Panel on Unlawful Harassment or Title IX Hearing Panel pursuant to the University’s non-discrimination and harassment policies.

  • Conduct ongoing assessment of use and best practices related to resolution of reports and complaints of discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct and contributes to ongoing review and development of related University policy.

  • Lead development of training content and related resources, and facilitate training related to the University’s nondiscrimination and harassment policies and relevant process options, and conflict resolution, for members of the campus community, in partnership with other members of the EOP team. This includes, but is not limited to, training for alternative resolution facilitators and members of the hearing panels.

  • Work with the Executive Director and Associate Provost on related University policy and process development and case management.

  • Collect and maintain data on resolution of complaints against faculty, other academic appointees, and postdoctoral researchers under the University’s non-discrimination and harassment policies; coordinate with campus partners, including ELR, on the data related to complaint resolutions for staff. Assist the Executive Director in any annual reporting.

  • Collaborates with all members of the EOP team to create and maintain a holistic approach to prevention, education, support, and response that support all members of the campus community, consistent with the University’s compliance efforts related to non-discrimination. 

  • Guides the implementation of compliance activities designated by the University's strategic plans. Monitors University compliance with regulations and laws.

  • Has a deep understanding to develop and administer policies related to affirmative action, non-discriminatory practices for persons with disabilities, and unlawful harassment or sexual misconduct.

  • May provide confidential counseling and expertise to those who feel they have experienced unlawful treatment based on University programs and activities.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s degree in a related field.

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years of relevant experience in sexual misconduct prevention and program oversight.

  • Experience developing and/or delivering training regarding sexual assault, sexual abuse, sexual harassment, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking.

  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in an intense and fast-paced environment, set priorities and meet deadlines; knowledge of relevant laws in a higher education setting (e.g., Title IX, VAWA/Campus SaVE, FERPA, Clery).

  • Ability to coordinate and work with others; ability to effectively communicate and work consultatively with faculty and administrators at all levels within the University.
