Position Information
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | The Department of Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill is dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of new and existing knowledge in the broad discipline of Biology by maintaining a high-quality faculty who integrate cutting-edge research and student-focused teaching. We are one of the largest academic departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. We have over 2,800 majors and we enroll over 5,000 undergraduate students in our classes each year. Our average total annual expenditure exceeds $24 million, with nearly half of that coming from grant sponsored research. The department is composed of 50 tenure-track faculty, 10 teaching faculty, 8 research faculty, and numerous active adjunct and emeritus faculty. We currently have 50 graduate students, 40 post-docs and employ approximately 60 additional graduate and undergraduate students from across the university to assist in our teaching and research missions. Our mission is supported by an administrative and technical staff of 20, with an additional 20 staff directly supporting research. The Matute Lab is interested in evolutionary processes and focuses on new species form. |

Position Summary | The Matute lab at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill is looking for a postdoctoral fellow in fungal genetics. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work in the field of medical mycology with an emphasis on Histoplasma. In particular, the project aims to functionally validate the involvement of candidate genes in interspecific differences in virulence and antifungal resistance. The postdoc will be encouraged to develop independent lines of research within the broader goals of the project and the lab. The ideal candidate will be creative, enthusiastic, motivated by experimental and analytical challenges, and proficient in molecular genetics. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Candidates should have a Ph.D.in Biology, Microbiology, Genetics, or Ecology and Evolution. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Experience in molecular genetics is essential. The candidate must have knowledge of the latest developments in the field and classical literature as well. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Management of BSL2+ pathogens is considered a plus, but it is not strictly required. Fungal genetics knowledge, CRISPR, molecular biology, recombinant DNA. |
