Position Summary

The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife is seeking a postdoctoral Research Associate to work on a multi-disciplinary investigation of the uptake of per- and poly-fluorinated aliphatic substances (PFAS) into aquatic organisms (Daphnia magna and fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas) and assessment of toxicity of PFAS chemicals and mixtures.  The position will involve collaboration with field, laboratory, and computational experiments in the laboratories of MSU Professors Cheryl Murphy, Dan Jones, and Angela Wilson and collaborators at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the University of California-Santa Barbara, and the University of Köln.

Position will involve collaborative design and optimization of experiments for assessing uptake of PFAS chemicals in aquatic organisms, working with members of the PFAS analytical laboratories to make minor modifications to EPA Draft Method 1633 for this purpose, interpreting LC-MS/MS measurement data, making oral presentations at meetings and conferences, mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, and contributing to the writing of manuscripts.

Required Degree

Doctorate -environmental/analytical chemistry, toxicology


Minimum Requirements

PhD in environmental/analytical chemistry, toxicology, biochemistry, or closely related field; demonstrated achievements in measuring xenobiotic organic chemicals in biological tissues and/or fluids; knowledge and expertise in experiment design and optimization of sample preparation for trace analysis of organic xenobiotics.  Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills and history of achievements as part of a research team.


Desired Qualifications

Expertise in the chemistry, physical properties, and analysis of PFAS chemicals including mixtures such as those found in aqueous film forming foams (AFFF);  demonstrated expertise in chemistry of natural waters, design and execution of sampling of surfactants in water and biological tissues, troubleshooting of solid-phase extraction and high performance liquid chromatography separations; compound measurements using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS); familiarity with procedures for processing of LC-MS/MS data.
