Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Museum Registrar for the Zimmerli Art Museum. Reporting to the Director, the Registrar is responsible for the overall performance of the Registration Department in its care and storage of the University Art Collection.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Maintenance of all records pertaining to that collection, as well as exhibitions and loans of art objects coming into and leaving the museum.
  • Supervises two Associate Registrars, an Assistant Registrar, a Digitization Assistant; a Preparator; work-study students and interns.
  • When scheduling demands, the Registrar will also supervise contract registrars working on specific projects.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in art history, art, museum studies or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • A minimum of five years registrarial experience in an art museum.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current and accepted museum registration techniques including digitization and database management; practices in conservation, object care and handling, storage techniques, and museum legal and ethical issues, art terms and classifications, art transport procedures and fine arts insurance policies; experience creating budgets for art transport and insurance.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organization.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, managing multiple complex projects in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Knowledge of developing collection care and management policies and procedures, including security, disaster, and emergency preparedness and response.
  • Knowledge and experience with being a courier, domestic and international art travel.
  • Knowledge and experience with collection documentation and processes related to deeds of gift, new acquisitions, accessions/deaccessions, loan agreements, etc
  • experience in creating and conducting condition reports.
  • Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver’s license would be required for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience directing and hiring registrarial staff and creating and monitoring departmental budgets.

Immunization Requirements


Under Policy 60.1.35 Immunization Policy for Rutgers Employees and Prospective Employees , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.
