The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the School of Medicine with approximately 250 Faculty, 127 postdoctoral fellows (both MDs and PhDs) along with over 320 support staff (not including hospital staff). In addition, the Department has 68 clinical residents distributed across the Divisions. The missions of research, education and patient care are intertwined, and are integral to the goals of the department.

The Department manages a university-affiliated children's health system with the physicians and leadership of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Rady Children's Hospital, and Rady Children's Specialists of San Diego, a Medical Practice Foundation, unifying pediatric patient care, research, education and community service programs.

Works on research data reporting assignments that are of moderate diversity in scope. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

The Research Data Analyst will serve as a pre-sample receipt contact for microbiome sequencing projects within the Knight lab, working closely with the collaborator to review and edit metadata, ensuring it adheres to requirements. They will be a key player in Knight lab validation studies within the lab, including developing and planning study experimental design and sampling procedures, creating studies in Qiita for wetlab staff, postdocs, and graduate students, formulating, reviewing, revising, and standardizing metadata, troubleshooting collaboratively regarding wetlab processes, and ensuring proper documentation is in place throughout the course of the project(s). The incumbent will further develop and implement standardization methods both within the Knight lab and The Microsetta Initiative (TMI) team, working closely with the Center for Microbiome Innovation (CMI) with the overall goal of process improvement. They will write, review, revise, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for protocols, data reporting and tracking, and analysis standardization throughout the lab to ensure proper adherence and reproducibility.

  • Six years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus two years of related experience/training.

  • Working knowledge of research function.

  • Working skills in statistical analysis, systems programming, database design and data security measures.

  • Working skills in analysis and consultation.

  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to build graphics in R and tables for publication, particularly in a molecular biology environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to build partner and stakeholder relationships.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of regulations, consent for sample collection, and IRB requirements.

  • A master’s degree in molecular biology or a related area; and/or equivalent experience/training.

  • Two to five years of experience working in an academic lab setting (particularly in a lab that handles large datasets in a research setting and collaborative environment), particularly within UCSD or a higher education environment.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

  • Able to work remotely as needed.


Pay Transparency Act Full Salary Range: $53,600 - $111,600 Annually

The University of California, San Diego is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Expected Pay Scale. Placement within the Expected Pay Scale is determined by internal equity, relevant qualifications, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
