Summary: The Director will provide strategic oversight for the ASTHO Leadership Institute Programs and related leadership activities. This position will serve as an additional leader on the leadership development team, work closely with various project teams across ASTHO, provide guidance and direction to the program design, supervise staff and manage partner relationships with various funders and key stakeholders.

Anticipated salary: $90,000 Extended experience: up to $107,500 if experience exceeds expectations

Principal Functions:

  • Provide strategic, technical and project management support to the ASTHO Leadership Institute Programs and related leadership programs.

  • Supervise and provide oversight to program staff, contractors and consultants implementing leadership programing.

  • Conduct facilitation and/or delivery of training programs as an event facilitator (critical leadership courses, forums, symposiums, etc.) for virtual, hybrid and in-person events.

  • Manage various SMEs, contractors, and vendor agreements for ASTHO’s leadership programs.

  • Establish strategic framework and accountability measures for external partner management.

  • Facilitate strategic meetings with stakeholders to capture key data points for the development of leadership competencies, assessments, and determination of key leadership drivers.

  • Stay abreast of learning field trends and best practices. Proactively research and identify opportunities to apply new thinking and best practices in Leadership Development to improve effectiveness.

  • Manage partner relationships with current and future leadership development partners (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Center for Creative Leadership, Morehouse School of Medicine, George Mason University, etc.)

  • Consult with project teams to implement consistent leadership development activities in their workplans.

  • Support the delivery of leadership training workshops and professional development sessions for ASTHO staff and members.

  • Engage with the Training and Learning team on the development, dissemination, and marketing of asynchronous leadership trainings in the ASTHO eLearning center.

  • Assist in writing progress reports and evaluating leadership project activities and outcomes.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Organizational Development, Leadership, MPH, MSW, or relevant field of study

  • Experience in state/local governmental public health highly preferred

  • At least 5 years progressive experience supporting leadership development programs

  • Organization skills to support multiple projects and deadlines

Specific skills needed – technical and behavioral

  • Strong written and oral communications skills

  • Ability to work within a team, independently and follow directions to complete tasks in a timely manner

  • Ability to facilitate virtual sessions with professionalism, sensitivity, and diplomacy under pressure

  • Active Listening — Give full attention to what other people are saying, take time to understand the points being made and ask questions as appropriate.

  • Demonstrated ability to convene and collaborate with multiple parties with varying interests and priorities

  • Excellent organization and time management skills required, including ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects concurrently.

  • Ability to grasp systems and systems changes at state, local, or federal levels.
