POSITION OBJECTIVE

The successful candidate will be responsible for the experimental portion of a combined experimental and computational effort aimed at understanding the complex physics of water entry of hypervelocity projectiles. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the mentorship of PhD students in addition to research responsibilities. US citizenship is preferred but not required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform water entry experiments using a 2-stage light gas gun using appropriate diagnostic tools (40%)
  • Analyze experimental data and synthesize findings with computational simulations (30%)
  • Collaboratively design experimental apparatus and develop diagnostic techniques with the PI (20%)
  • Mentor PhD students and provide guidance on their research projects (10%)
  • NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Ensure maintenance on equipment is performed at regular intervals
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience: Successful completion of PhD level research. Some experience in extreme dynamic loading of materials, hypersonics, multiphase fluid dynamics, and/or gasdynamics are preferred.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS

    Position involves working occasionally with heavy equipment, and frequent handling of volatile materials, namely gunpowder and hydrogen gas. The laboratory contains high powered Class IV lasers which require on-site training. Travel to conferences to share research results is expected.
