Description of Work Unit
ESS is a department within the Warner College of Natural Resources. The mission of ESS is to understand the function of ecosystems and watersheds across space and over time. We assess ecosystem sustainability by examining interactions within and between natural and human systems in the context of current stresses such as changing climate, species introductions, land-use change, and increased demand for water. The department uses state of the art technologies and approaches to provide quality education to future scientists, educators and decision makers, conduct cutting edge interdisciplinary research, and deliver culturally relevant outreach programs that empower our students and the general public locally, nationally, and internationally.

Position Summary
A new assistant professor in remote sensing data science would be expected to have demonstrated excellence in publishing, code development and sharing, and teaching in environmental data science which will include remote sensing, developing methods in remote sensing applications, machine learning, and environmental big data used to help inform and solve environmental sustainability problems with data-rich approaches. The successful candidate will teach both core quantitative approaches and remote sensing courses in the department’s undergraduate and graduate programs focused on ecosystems, water, and food system sustainability and/or develop new graduate-level remote sensing courses in their area of expertise.
Salary range listed is 9 month salary with potential for additional summer salary.

Required Job Qualifications
  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in ecology, geography, earth sciences, environmental science, sustainability or related field by the time of their application, and
  • Research in ecosystem science with a focus on remote sensing and data science as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and
  • A demonstrated commitment to teaching in remote sensing and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Postdoctoral or equivalent experience;
  • Evidence of excellence in research using advanced analytical methods/modeling applied to remote sensing big-data issues;
  • Excellence in teaching related to remote sensing and data science applications in ecosystem science and sustainability;
  • Intellectual leadership and strong publication and successful grant writing record;
  • Demonstrated experience in transdisciplinary collaborative research across natural sciences, social sciences and other fields;
  • Evidence of service and outreach engaging with stakeholders regarding scientific knowledge on remote sensing and data science;
  • Commitment to professional community engagement, leadership, and growth; and
  • Evidence of commitment to enhancing diversity and inclusion.
