Computational Fluid Dynamics Postdoctoral Fellow

Job Description

The Department of Physics at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, in collaboration with the University of
Connecticut and the Naval Research Laboratory, is seeking one Postdoctoral Fellow to lead a project studying type Ia
supernovae, incorporating newly-developed first-principles turbulently-driven detonation initiation models into three-
dimensional full-star hydrodynamical simulations. All applicants should have strong high-performance computational
skills. Knowledge of nuclear astrophysics, and experience with hydrodynamical models, turbulence modeling, nuclear
networks, and radiative transfer on high-performance computers is a plus.

The position is funded by a NASA collaborative study led by Drs. Robert Fisher (University of Massachusetts Dartmouth -
UMassD), Alexei Poludnenko (University of Connecticut - UConn), and Vadim Gamezo (Naval Research Laboratory -
NRL), and will engage the fellow with cross-disciplinary research connecting the small-scale properties of turbulence and
detonation initiation with full-star simulations, as well as the predicted nucleosynthetic and spectral signatures of their
thermonuclear transients. The fellow will also interact with faculty, graduate students, and scientists at UMassD, UConn,
and NRL.

The position has an annual salary of $50k with benefits, and funding for travel to scientific meetings. The successful
candidate could begin as soon as possible. The position will be administered through an annual contract with NASA. The
initial appointment will be for one year, and funds will be available to renew the contract through a second and third year
conditional on performance.
