Job Title

Research Project Manager (fully remote or hybrid possible)

Job Description

Notre Dame researchers do amazing things! Their highest aim is to do good in the world… to heal, unify and enlighten. Does supporting world change give you meaning? Can you help our researchers accomplish their greatest ambitions? Do you get energy from meeting customer needs? If yes, we want you to join us.
Notre Dame has grown significantly and research expenditures have increased by ~150% since 2006. In addition to the increase in expenditures, our research occurs in more than 30 core facilities and across a broad range of subject matter areas such as: nanotechnology, cancer, environmental change, global health, wireless technology and more. Notre Dame researchers innovate in the field, on the bench, and at the policy table. This is where you can help to make a difference.

Notre Dame Research (NDR) recently created a Research Project Management team to support researchers with the increasing needs of managing large and complex projects and programs. The Research Project Manager (RPM) role exists to leverage researcher’s time and support faculty in their growth trajectory. The RPM position is perfect for you if:
  • The world of research naturally engages you; and
  • You’re unrivaled at enthusiastically navigating diverse relationships, while strategically managing multiple, complex projects and tasks simultaneously

To this end, we are looking for an exceptional problem solver to play this pivotal role in supporting the world changing research efforts of Notre Dame.
Utilizing a variety of skill sets the RPM will manage a diverse portfolio of University programs, projects and initiatives. Engagements may include a large and/or complex research project, continuous research programs (program management) or temporary special assignments. To effectively meet these assignments, the collaborative, solutions-oriented RPM should express dexterity in each of these areas:

  • Business Development: Recognizes the “launch” phase of NDR project management service for the research community. Positions service for inclusion in researchers’ proposals. Demonstrates positive impact of service on research programs. Develops researcher relationships into customer relationships.
  • Relationship Management: Provides positive leadership in all activities. Interacts with integrity, using judgment and tact, with faculty, staff, and administrators. Gains or has broad, deep knowledge of campus operations and has broad and deep knowledge of research administration guidance and processes. Collaborates directly with campus administrative offices. Influences without authority.
  • Project Management: Applies project management principles with nuance and finesse to complex programs and projects. Leads researchers and research team members to develop project timelines, identify obstacles, and proactively seek solutions. Structures and drives work using methods and tools that get results. Works independently, receiving input and direction from researcher and research team members on research program/project specifics.
  • Customer Service: Masterfully interacts with customers from a well-honed customer service mindset. Enjoys discovering and satisfying customer needs. Welcomes requests, along with opportunities to serve in concierge role. Always responsive and timely, either directly or through referral to other resources.

We want talented Research Project Management professionals like you to join us as we continue doing good in the world. With Notre Dame’s unique mission, growing research program, and commitment to our research professionals, we believe there is no better place for you to choose to share your talents than with our University and researchers. We hope you join us!
A strong connection to the work, along with the ability to work both independently and within a team, is critical for success in the RPM role. NDR supports building your professional capabilities through internal and external training, as well as participation in professional organizations. For the eighth consecutive year, the University of Notre Dame has received distinction as one of the top higher education workplaces in the country in the Chronicle of Higher Education’s annual “Great Colleges to Work For” survey… and we are proud of it!
