Job Description

ACE (Academic Center for Excellence) exists to encourage and equip students to develop and practice skills for independent learning. Sessions in the ACE Lab reinforce and elaborate on course learning objectives and concepts through peer and professional tutoring and guided skills practice. Tutors facilitate student learning by helping to clarify specific course content and promote the use of appropriate study strategies. ACE tutors encourage content understanding and engage in active learning.

Essential Duties Summary
  • Represents Academic Affairs and the college’s efforts towards student success by providing currently enrolled curriculum students with academic assistance in specific subject(s) offered at the college. Tutors do not complete assignments, provide answers to tests or quizzes, or write papers for students. Rather, tutors engage in active learning and modeling problem solving strategies.
  • Facilitates scheduled and drop-in tutoring sessions with students in Math and Biology courses (most common courses MAT 002,
  • Demonstrates ability and commitment to tutor specific academic discipline courses.
  • Engages in ongoing training and professional development in the discipline of active learning and peer education.
  • Maintains accurate and detailed records of services provided to students.
  • Maintains student confidentiality.
  • Assists with promotion of ACE services.
  • Observes all ACE policies and processes.
  • Collaborates with instructors, as needed, to ensure a teamwork approach for the benefit of students.
  • Arrives punctually and submits a monthly time sheet reflective of pre-determined hours and schedule.
  • Assists with greeting students and helping students feel welcomed and supported.
  • Communicates regularly with the ACE Coordinator regarding any issues, concerns, and suggestions for tutoring and improvement of tutoring services for students.
  • Assists in supporting programming intended for student success in conjunction with Academic Affairs. This may include promoting tutoring at campus events and pre-scheduled visits to classes.

Salary Range
$15 per hour

Required Qualifications
  • A high school diploma is required for all tutors. Currently enrolled students with no earned degree may be considered.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in specific academic discipline(s) may be required for some subjects.

Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with developmental studies, online instruction, learning style modalities, and utilization of active learning strategies.

Physical Demands
ADA requirements for this position include critical thinking skills with the ability to
process information, analyze data, make assessments, and exercise good judgment to
make decisions; possess ease of mobility within the work environment and other areas
of campus; and effective use of all forms of communication (oral, visual, auditory),
including use of computers.
