Job Description

General Statement of Responsibilities

Instructor is responsible for assisting with all aspects of library service; provides direct service to students, faculty, staff, and the public; assists in materials selection and weeding; instructs groups in the use of the library, especially its electronic resources; cooperates and communicates with faculty in developing assignments, providing instruction, and maintaining areas of subject expertise. Participate in the full range of professional and college-related activities, including professional development, departmental and college-wide meetings, and community involvement. Instructor will maintain college standards in all aspects of professionalism, record keeping and instruction within the team atmosphere of the library department of Rogue Community College.  
 
Supervision Received
The dean, in consultation with the department chair is responsible for carrying out the evaluation of instructors under procedures developed by the vice president. The dean confers with the department chair in decisions regarding instructor workload, professional growth, retention, and department staffing levels.

Examples of Duties - Essential Functions

1. Provides excellent public service to library users.
2. Answers reference questions from the college community and the public.
3. Develops and implements bibliographic instruction programs, including online and residential library instruction courses and orientations.
4. Works collaboratively to develop strategies for providing bibliographic instruction for distance learning.
5. Develops library instructional materials and research guides in written and electronic formats.
6. Trains college staff in the use of library resources.
7. May provide back-up assistance at the circulation desk.
8. Participates in the development of the library collection. Selects and de-selects appropriate library materials for the general collection, based on curriculum and other information needs.
9. Collaborates with other faculty in development and support of new curricular areas, building articulations to other departments and institutions, as appropriate.
10. Engages in regular professional growth activity based on the objectives established in an approved professional growth plan.
11. Represents the program and the College to the community, business, public agencies, and other organizations in a professional manner.
12. Participates as a team member in departmental meetings and planning activities.
13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Screening Criteria

 

Education: Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program required.
   
Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.
 
Experience: Two years of experience in a library setting required. Academic library experience preferred. Experience with bibliographic instruction, teaching the use of the online resources, and Library of Congress call number system preferred.  
 
Knowledge of: Computer applications for communication and learning, including, but not limited to, word processing, the Internet, multi-media presentations, and spreadsheets; curriculum development; the community college’s mission, role in higher education, and student population; and sensitivity to a diverse student body and its needs.  
 
Ability to: Creatively retrieve information using print and electronic resources; work with the public effectively and diplomatically; teach library and research skills to individuals and groups; learn new technologies quickly and train others in their use; work well with an innovative and flexible staff; develop and complete projects independently; work and communicate effectively and respectfully with a diverse faculty, staff, and student community; demonstrate a commitment to professional standards and growth. Pass a criminal background check.  
 
Licenses: If required to drive on behalf of the college, must possess a valid Oregon Driver License and provide proof of an acceptable driving record.

 Manual dexterity and coordination are required for less than half of the daily work period (about 40%) which is spent sitting while operating office equipment such as computers, keyboards, 10-key, telephones, and other standard office equipment. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, twist, crouch, climb, balance, see, talk, hear, and manipulate objects. The position requires some mobility including the ability to move materials less than 5 pounds daily, 5-25 pounds occasionally, and 25-60 pounds rarely. This position requires both verbal and written communication abilities.
  
Working ConditionsThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
 
 While performing the duties of this position, the employee is primarily working indoors in an office environment. The employee is not exposed to hazardous conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and lighting is adequate.

This is an Adjunct Faculty position for teaching in the Library Services department at the Redwood Campus in Grants Pass.
