The Minerals Research Laboratory (MRL) is located in Asheville, NC. MRL keeps in contact with the North Carolina and United States mineral industry to define the needs of the industry and to initiate research projects.
The work of the MRL, like the overall work of Industry Expansion Solutions (IES), is accomplished by developing and delivering superior professional education and technical assistance programs that meet the needs of engineers and technical professionals in the mining and minerals industry and by advocating the use of engineering science and technology and best practices to promote corporate growth and the production of quality products.
Industry Expansion Solutions is a state-wide university based economic development organization specifically chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly to transfer knowledge and technology to North Carolina industry to support global competitiveness.

Essential Job Duties
The position reports to the Director of MRL and has the overall responsibility for the following:
- Design and costing of metallurgical processes in consultation with clients;
- Perform the day-to-day activities of the lab including administrative tasks;
- Learn the budgeting and accounting systems;
- Follow the safety and environmental requirements of the facilities;
- Supervise research technician;
In addition, this position is required to teach mineral processing courses at the Environmental Studies Department of UNC-Asheville.

Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
Other Required Qualifications
- Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- A PhD or Master of Science in Mineral Processing, Metallur,gy or Chemical Engineering and 5 years of successful experience preferred
- At least 5 years experience in applied research in mineral processing or an appropriate field of the mineral industry.
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
- A valid drivers license is required for travel. NC drivers license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
