Who We Are

Established in 1959 with a gift from the Ford Motor Company and founded on the original Henry Ford Estate, UM-Dearborn was forged in a community of working people with the global economy in mind. The University is committed to academic excellence, community engagement, and service to southeastern Michigan. Over the past two decades, the institution has taken deliberate and successful steps to improve its academic profile and increase its recognition as it has evolved from a regional commuter campus to a university with a full range of services for students. In the 2023 edition of US News and World Report, the University of Michigan-Dearborn ranks as the top public university in Michigan in its category and fifth overall among regional public universities in the Midwest. In 2020, UM-Dearborn was named a top producer of Fulbright U.S. Scholars.

UM-Dearborn is an engine of social mobility and is frequently included in US News and World Report’s list of Top Performers on Social Mobility as measured by enrollment and graduation rates of Pell Grant eligible students. Among Michigan’s 15 public universities, graduates of UM-Dearborn enjoy the second highest median annual earnings of students two years after graduation.

Today, UM-Dearborn is comprised of four academic units: the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters; College of Business; College of Engineering and Computer Science; and College of Education, Health, and Human Services. Across these units, the University offers more than 100 undergraduate majors and minors, and more than 40 graduate degree programs that include flexible evening and online options as well as doctoral programs. Academic programs integrate teaching, research, and service in ways that enhance the learning experience for students, providing small class sizes and a dynamic environment that fosters innovation, openness, and creativity.

The University provides a strong foundation in the liberal arts and sciences and the knowledge and skills essential for career and personal success. Academic programs across the curriculum emphasize learning beyond the classroom. The institution’s close ties to industry, the regional community, other educational institutions, and government agencies enable applied research opportunities, undergraduate projects, meaningful internship and co-op experiences, study abroad, student employment, and innovative courses and programs. In the last year, all four academic colleges at the institution have committed to Practice-Based Learning (PBL) across their curricula.

In recent years, departments across campus have adopted advanced technologies to meet changing educational needs. The University has celebrated the opening of multiple new buildings, including the Natural Sciences Building, and various new labs. The applied nature of a UM-Dearborn education was on full display during the pandemic as these new facilities equipped students and faculty to join the fight against Covid-19 by producing PPE from home in 2020.

Leadership and Governance

Chancellor Domenico Grasso is the sixth chancellor of the University of Michigan-Dearborn and the first Michigan graduate to lead the university. He also is an executive officer of the University of Michigan. Prior to joining UM-Dearborn in 2018, he was provost and chief academic officer at the University of Delaware. Earlier in his career, he held posts as Smith College’s Rosemary Bradford Hewlett Professor and founding director of the Picker Engineering Program — the first engineering program at a women’s college and one of the few at a liberal arts college in the United States. He is a former Army officer and earned his Ph.D. from Michigan in environmental engineering.

Considered a leading thinker in the field, Grasso has published extensively in the areas of environmental engineering and engineering educational reform. He has held numerous high-profile posts, including as advisor to NATO, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Academy of Engineering. Grasso also has a passion for holistic engineering education and has reasoned for the importance of the social sciences, arts, and humanities in better contextualizing the relevance of STEM education.

Dr. Gabriella Scarlatta has served as UM-Dearborn’s provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs since July 2022 after serving a year in the interim role. Prior to becoming interim provost, Dr. Scarlatta served seven years as Associate Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters and the Director of the French Studies Program. Working with undergraduates and taking part in numerous university service activities, her long career at UM-Dearborn has been marked with distinction. Provost Scarlatta joined UM-Dearborn in 1996 and was promoted to professor of French, with tenure, in 2017. She has served as chair of the Department of Language, Culture, and Communication and co-chair of the Department of Humanities, has been a member of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters’ Executive and Curriculum Committees, and has served on the Faculty Senate. She served as a faculty representative on the Lecturers' Employee Organization university bargaining team in 2009, 2012, and 2017. She teaches French literature and culture and has published several books and scholarly articles about the French and Italian Renaissance and early women writers.

She received her B.A. and the Maitrise in Modern Languages from the Universite de Savoie, Chambery, France. She earned her M.A. in French and Italian Literatures and her Ph.D. in Modern Languages from Wayne State University.

Shared Governance

The University of Michigan-Dearborn has a long tradition of strong shared governance within a well-established structure. The Faculty Senate acts as a critical conduit between faculty and administration, communicating the faculty’s perspectives on all matters pertaining to the interests of the University. In addition to the Faculty Senate, Executive Committees in each of the four colleges are empowered by the Board of Regents to act on behalf of the faculty in matters of appointments, promotion and tenure, budgets, and curriculum.

Go Blueprint for Success

Shortly after arriving at UM-Dearborn, Chancellor Grasso led the institution through a comprehensive visioning exercise, resulting in a new strategic plan, Go Blueprint for Success, which was finalized in 2019. This strategic plan starts from the premise that UM-Dearborn holds as a fundamental institutional tenet that a university must play an active role in addressing the challenges its communities face. Currently, southeastern Michigan, the state of Michigan itself, and the industrial Midwest are facing new and difficult economic realities and related social problems like racial and ethnic divisions, urban environmental problems, and questions around the future of manufacturing. In response to these issues, Go Blueprint for Success focuses on four central priorities — student experience and success; diversity, equity & inclusion; faculty & staff excellence; and economic sustainability — that will contribute to the realization of UM-Dearborn’s ambitious institutional goals and help catalyze an economic and civic revival in the region.

The University has set a goal of increasing its enrollment to 10,000 students in the coming decade. In order to achieve this number, UM-Dearborn is committed to a vigorous recruiting strategy, growth in undergraduate and graduate programs, and increased funding for scholarships, financial aid, and infrastructure. Engaging students in experiences beyond the classroom will enable them to see the impact of their work in the local community and encourage them as young graduates to lend their talents to the needs of the region. The University is striving to expand student participation in internships, research projects, student life, and civic engagement opportunities to facilitate this local community engagement. Fundamental to all these efforts is providing excellent academic programs, led by accomplished faculty. UM-Dearborn continues to be on the cutting edge of knowledge in the sciences, humanities, and professional disciplines, recruiting excellent and engaged scholars and teachers, engaging in continuous assessment and improvement of its academic programs, and expanding curricular offerings to meet the evolving needs of its students.

THE COLLEGE OF BUSINESS

Founded in 1959, the College of Business (“College” or “the College”) offers nine undergraduate, six master’s, and several dual-degree programs and is recognized for its excellent faculty and engaging student experience. Students at the College develop skills that enable them to have an important impact on economic opportunities within their community and beyond. The College of Business includes 1,250 undergraduates and 450 graduate students from 20 states and 12 countries. After enjoying substantial increases in enrollment between 2015 and 2018, enrollment has been declining slightly. Reflective of demographic trends within the Midwest, the bulk of this decline is seen in domestic undergraduate students. International relationships have helped support enrollment, and online offerings continue to be in high demand for both domestic and international students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

An increased focus on student persistence since 2020 has led to impressive improvement in the College’s graduation rates: prior to this effort, the College of Business could expect a six-year graduation rate of around 20%. Last year, it saw a four-year graduation rate of approximately 40%. Both enrollment and completion rates will remain a priority for the new dean. Many undergraduate students take classes on a part-time basis, and about 60% transfer to UM-Dearborn from local community colleges. Eighty-five percent of graduate students work full time, generally attending classes at night, and many receive sponsorship from their current employer.

The College is organized into two departments: 1) Accounting & Finance and 2) Management Studies, and offers a Bachelor of Business Administration degree to all undergraduate students. The College offers majors in Accounting, Digital Marketing, Finance, General Business, Human Resource Management, Information Systems Management, Marketing, Small Business Management, and Supply Chain Management. In 2017, the College implemented a revised BBA curriculum. At the graduate level, the College offers a Master of Business Administration and MS degrees in Accounting, Business Analytics, Finance, Information Systems, and Supply Chain Management. The College additionally offers dual-degree graduate programs, including the MBA/MSE in Industrial and Systems Engineering.

An early adopter of online education, the College’s MBA program is available in person, online, or in hybrid format. Additionally, many of the master’s programs have online options, including the MS in Finance, the MBA/MS in Finance, and the MBA/MSE in Industrial and Systems Engineering. The College’s programs are among the nation’s best, according to U.S. News and World Report, Poets and Quants, and Princeton Review. In the Poets and Quants’ Best Online MBA Programs of 2023 ranking, UM-Dearborn’s program moved up 25 spots compared to its ranking the previous year and is currently listed as the 24th best online MBA program in the nation.

The College of Business has 67 faculty members, including 37 tenured and tenure-track faculty and 30 non-tenure track faculty who teach the 1,700 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the College. Faculty are productive scholars who are strongly committed to their research activities. Research productivity is on par with many more research-intensive colleges as the College supports its faculty with teaching load reductions, summer teaching, and professional development funds. Alongside teaching and service, research productivity is an important criterion in the promotion and tenure process. Faculty in the College give students— including undergraduate students—opportunities to engage in research collaborations to enhance the learning that happens in the classroom.

Opened in October 2010, the College’s Bloomberg Financial Laboratory has become the College’s flagship learning space, providing students a trading room to experience the interactions between the real economy and the financial sector in a way that richly complements the analytical skills and conceptual knowledge they acquire in the classroom. The Bloomberg Lab gives students access to real-time stock market quotations, the latest market news, and a variety of hands-on experiences. Faculty also use the Bloomberg Lab to provide experiential and simulated learning in finance and other disciplines.

Students in the College of Business have access to the College’s Internship and Management Center which provides services like interview preparation, resume and cover letter review, internship and job search support, and major and career advice and counseling. Well run and well respected by students and participating businesses, the Internship Program gives students real world experiences that make them more attractive on the job market upon graduation. Recognizing that a global perspective is required in today’s economy, the College offers undergraduate and graduate students access to international study abroad opportunities, ranging from a five-week long management program in Padua, Italy to a one-week spring break trip to Taiwan.

The College’s Board of Advisors consists of 19 individuals including regional, national, and international leaders that help raise funds, advise the dean, and ensure student access to internships. This body is a critical link between the College, alumni, and industry, and there is an opportunity to grow its size and impact in the coming years.

Responsibilities*

THE ROLE OF THE DEAN

The dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the College and reports to the provost. A collaborative member of UM-Dearborn’s senior leadership team, the dean must be a clear communicator and enthusiastic champion for the College of Business and the University’s role in southeastern Michigan. The dean works with faculty, staff, and students to lead all strategic visioning for the College, oversees all academic programs and services, and provides intellectual and academic leadership in matters related to curriculum, research, and faculty development and excellence.

The dean oversees the College’s $15 million annual budget and manages a lean but highly skilled team of direct reports that includes two department chairs, one associate dean, one assistant dean, and three staff members: the Marketing and Communications Director, the Development Director, and the Internship and Career Management Center Director.

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE NEXT DEAN

The College seeks as its next dean an academic leader who is committed to supporting teaching and research and building stronger relationships with the regional community and industry. The dean must be well-versed in the challenges facing academic institutions that rely on tuition support and bring creative energy to build on the work underway while collaborating with partners across the University to develop new innovative solutions to the College’s enrollment challenges. Specific opportunities for the dean include:

Lead accreditation and strategic planning efforts while developing a bold vision for the College of Business

The College of Business was successfully re-accredited by AACSB in 2021 and planning is in process for its next re-accreditation in 2026 under the AACSB’s new standards. While the College is already preparing for this visit and the implications of the new standards, the College requires a dean who can quickly jump into this endeavor. Critical to the next assessment and a top priority for the next dean will be the College of Business’s new strategic plan. The plan should reflect the values of UM-Dearborn’s current strategic plan, Go Blueprint for Success, which encourages the University’s four colleges to improve collaboration and interdisciplinary ties. A clear, bold, and well-executed strategy will leverage the College’s existing strengths and identify unmet needs that it is uniquely positioned to address.

Further increase the research profile of the College of Business

Aligned with the University leadership’s ambitious plans to increase the research productivity of the institution, the College of Business has recently reduced faculty teaching loads. Working closely with the provost, the next dean will ensure the faculty maintains its strength in outstanding, student-centered instruction while creating space and time to engage in more scholarship.

Explore new ways to increase enrollment

In fall 2022, the University of Michigan-Dearborn celebrated an increase in both new student enrollment and graduation rates. The University saw many of these enrollment gains from masters-level students and international students. Despite these gains, the University’s overall enrollment dropped by about 1% compared to fall 2021 as UM-Dearborn, like all colleges and universities in the area, is challenged by a regional population decline that has resulted in a decrease in high school-aged students locally.

Enrollment trends at the College of Business follow this pattern, and the next dean must prioritize enrollment for the long-term health of its academic programs. The University has a decentralized budget model and increasing student enrollment brings in revenue to the College while promoting greater accessibility to the University and enhancing the diversity and inclusivity of the campus. To increase enrollment, the next dean will raise the visibility of the College and the high-touch educational experience it offers students while building new student pipelines across southeast Michigan. In addition, the College has intentionally expanded its international partnerships in recent years. The next dean should sustain those relationships while making strategic investments in new international partnerships. In all cases, the dean has an opportunity to strengthen support structures for students to ensure retention and graduation rates continue to increase.

Finally, the next dean should work with faculty to identify opportunities for new academic programs where there is unmet need and where the College is well positioned to address those needs. Whether in person, hybrid, or online, these potential programs should demonstrate evidence of viability and long-term sustainability.

Enable the success of a talented and committed faculty

The College benefits from a talented and long-serving faculty that cares deeply about its success. As a generational shift approaches, the next dean should create structures that nurture and mentor junior faculty to realize their full potential. By ensuring that the faculty continues to deliver outstanding instruction while growing its research output, and by encouraging greater collaboration within the College and across the University, the dean will sustain a vital intellectual atmosphere and extend that knowledge to benefit the region.

In addition, there is an opportunity for the next dean to further cultivate administrative leadership among the College’s faculty to ensure there is a deep bench and long pipeline of faculty leaders who are willing and prepared to step into critical roles, including department chair and associate dean.

Build and grow exciting new external partnerships

The University and the southeast Michigan community connect closely on multiple levels. This relationship has been enhanced by Chancellor Grasso and the current and past College of Business deans and is currently informed by the Go Blueprint for Success strategic plan. The next dean will seize the significant opportunities available to deepen the College’s engagement with business, civic, and community leaders. In particular, the dean can develop new connections with industry to create opportunities for faculty research, practice-based learning experiences, and pipelines for internship and employment opportunities for students. The dean will explore opportunities not yet available to students, which might include seeking partnerships beyond large companies like Ford and General Motors and establishing relationships with midsize organizations. The dean must be visible and well-connected to the business community and work to build a clear and powerful brand for the College in the marketplace, broadcasting these accomplishments and partnerships both internally and externally.

Champion and foster a diverse and inclusive college community

Forged in a community of working people, the University’s mission from its founding has been one of access. The dean must understand this mission and embrace the University’s commitment to fostering an inclusive campus for faculty, staff, students, and the broader community. The dean will be a passionate advocate for inclusion and promote a culture of belonging as spelled out in the University’s Go Blueprint for Success. The dean will help recruit and retain faculty that better reflects the composition of the College’s student body. The dean will also strengthen engagement with the diverse communities surrounding the campus, including the development of more robust local student enrollment pipelines.

Lead the internal operations of the College and steward finances with deft

The successful dean will be an effective manager, a sophisticated budget and revenue planner in the context of a decentralized budget model, and an administrator of sound judgment. The dean must ensure that the College’s departments and staff are organized effectively and encourage professional growth and development among staff and faculty alike.

The dean must also focus on generating and diversifying revenue streams from external sources and fundraising. The University of Michigan system is in the silent phase of a comprehensive capital campaign, and the College of Business dean will work closely with UM-Dearborn’s Chancellor and the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement to make the case for the impact of philanthropic support on the College. The next dean will need to solicit and close six-, seven-, and eight-figure gifts for new College of Business initiatives as well as naming opportunities for the College, professorships, fellowships, and scholarships.

Advocate for the College of Business across the University

The Dean will be a visible force beyond the boundaries of the College and will advocate on behalf of its faculty, staff, and students by compellingly communicating its priorities to the University community and articulating its contribution to the success of the institution’s mission.

The Dean will also serve as a valued partner to and collaborator with other senior leaders in the broader University community, including the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement, the Dean of Students, the Vice Provost for Enrollment Management, the Vice Provost for Research, and many others across campus. UM-Dearborn has only four colleges and four deans, and this tight-knit group works exceptionally well together. The next College of Business Dean will have an opportunity to deepen these relationships, removing barriers for faculty and students to collaborate across academic colleges, and ensuring that the College is positioned for success.
