Overview:

The Vehicle and Mobility Systems Research Section of the Buildings and Transportation Science Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking applicants for the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Applied Research for Mobility Systems Group. The Vehicle and Mobility Systems Research Section focuses on accelerating the development of advanced vehicles and complex mobility systems through advances in connected and autonomous vehicle technologies, communications, systems integration, simulation frameworks, and decision science.  The objective of the hiring group is to provide leadership in advanced hardware-in-the-loop research, simulation frameworks, and sensor emulation to accelerate the development of transportation technologies from component-level to full vehicle and ultimately traffic system applications.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and implement cooperative driving automation (CDA) algorithms for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) in diverse scenarios to assess impact of emerging mobility technologies on the transportation system.
  • Modeling and simulation of emerging vehicle and transportation systems in various platforms and packages using physics based or artificial intelligence (AI) based approaches.
  • Development and implementation of advanced software-in-the-loop (SIL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) systems to support advanced powertrain, CAV and CDA control system design, validation, and verification
  • Working with R&D staff to develop, prepare reports, publications, and journal articles based on going research

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, transportation engineering, computer and electrical engineering or a related field completed within the last 5 years

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Programming languages: Python, C, C++, Matlab/Simulink
  • Proficient with traffic microsimulation software tools (e.g., VISSIM, SUMO, AIMSUN)
  • Proficient with dSpace or other real-time HIL systems
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
