Overview

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. The Environmental Sciences Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks an individual for a postdoctoral research associate position in the Environmental Risk and Energy Analysis Group. The candidate will work with a multi-disciplinary group of experts in aerosol science and technology to study aerosol microphysical processes. ORNL aerosol research program encompasses a range of projects from nuclear fuel production and nonproliferation, defense technology, biosecurity, to atmospheric and climate change sciences. The candidate should be an independent thinker and able to participate creatively in defining and refining research directions.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities

The successful candidate will interact with a team of scientists and engineers to investigate aerosol formation and environmental aging involving various phases of water, vapor, droplets, and ice crystals. The preferred skills are in aerosol instrumentation and experimental design, laboratory and field aerosol collection and measurements, computational data analysis, and multi-physics simulation. Activities will involve: 1) investigations of aerosol formation processes, 2) aerosol data collection and measurement, 3) implementation of multi-physics model simulations and computational data analysis; and 4) contributions to reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed journal articles. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact with ORNL scientists involved in aerosol science and technology research in different divisions at ORNL.

 

Basic Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Engineering//Natural Science with research in aerosol science and technology or a related field, completed within the last 5 years
  • Experience in aerosol instrumentation and experimental design
  • Computational data analysis and multi-physics simulation related to aerosol investigations
  • Demonstrate oral and written communication skills (including reports and publications)
  • Be able to work independently and interact with a multi-disciplinary group
  • Author or co-author of peer-reviewed literature publications
