Position Introduction

As a Bilingual Academic Support Coach, you will be part of a dedicated team of Access and Disability Services professionals who work together to provide exceptional service and support to students who are English Language Learners, have disabilities, and/or face other barriers to education at McHenry County College (MCC). Through one-on-one coaching sessions, you will help students adjust successfully to the demands of college, provide students with guidance and practice in developing skills related to academic success, and assist students in determining school and personal goals, and the action steps for achieving those goals. You will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and community partners. You will also assist with Department and College initiatives, such as educating the campus community about Diversity, Equity, Belonging, and Inclusion (DEBI) topics and creating tools, programs, and workshops to support student success. Position Summary

Provide ongoing, individual support and tutoring to students who are English Language Learners, have disabilities, and/or face other barriers to education. Develop programming for these students to improve critical skills for their academic, personal, and social success. Connect students to resources that meet their specific needs, provide advocacy, and help in working with faculty and staff and in navigating the campus community, and encourage the development of student coping skills, resiliency, self-advocacy, and language skills.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

· Provide ongoing case management, follow-up, and support to students who are English Language Learners, have disabilities, and/or face other barriers to education
· Mentor students through intentional relationships, monitor student progress toward goals, and guide students as they become stronger self-advocates
· Engage with students to help improve skills such as time management, note-taking, concentration, test-preparation, and productivity; help students develop their own personal learning strategies
· Coach students for improved management of the challenges that interfere with their ability to be successful academically, personally, and socially (e.g. problem solving or self-regulation)
· Assist English Language Learners in improving their language skills in order to increase their understanding of course materials and content
· Connect English Language Learners with College and community resources to help improve their language skills and increase their understanding of course materials and content
· Create programs and workshops that enhance the leadership, self-advocacy, and interpersonal skills of students
· Work collaboratively with other departments on campus to create opportunities for educational training and programming to create an inclusive and accessible campus environment for students
· Develop, in collaboration with other College departments, learning resources and tools to support students’ academic success
· Work with academic and student affairs departments in providing appropriate referrals for the overall success of students
· Assist with providing appropriate accommodations and services for students with disabilities
· Develop appropriate education plans for students in alignment with their goals and advise students on selection of courses, in collaboration with the Academic Advising office
· Assist with facilitating orientation activities for new students by presenting College information and guiding students
· Maintain appropriate, accurate records and case notes in a timely manner

Required Education

Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited institution

Other Required Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree in English as a Second Language, foreign language, linguistics, cultural studies, education, counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field from a regionally accredited institution
· Speaks and/or writes any language in addition to English
· Directly related experience working with or teaching individuals who are English Language Learners

Desired Qualifications

· Master’s degree in a related field from a regionally accredited institution
· Speaks and/or writes any language in addition to English
· Experience providing academic support to students with disabilities
· Community college experience

· Demonstrated cultural competence and ability to build trust and credibility with diverse students and colleagues
· Understanding of the challenges faced by students who are English Language Learners, have disabilities, or face other barriers to education
· Commitment to effectively serving underrepresented student populations
· Familiarity with or willing to learn, the Civil rights laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act as Amended, Section 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, the ADAA and other applicable laws, and their application at the post-secondary level
· Knowledge of or willing to learn applicable concepts, such as Universal Design for Learning, the social model of disability, and accessibility
· Ability to work in a dynamic environment and to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs
· Self-motivated, self-directed, and the ability to work independently
· Ability to learn technological applications
· Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks
· Ability to provide discretion with confidential information
