New River CTC seeks a creative and enthusiastic team member to serve as Campus Event Coordinator for the Southern West Virginia GEAR UP Partnership (SWVGU) serving five school districts: Mercer, Monroe, Raleigh, Summers, and Wyoming county schools. SWVGU is funded by the US Department of Education to increase the college-going rate of low-income secondary school students in these school systems. The Campus Event Coordinator will plan college awareness events to be held at New River Community and Technical College campuses that will serve SWVGU students and their families. The Campus Event Coordinator will work with college staff and the staff of the public-school districts served to plan and promote such events.  The position will be responsible for ensuring the successful execution of events. The Campus Event Coordinator will also be responsible for mandatory reporting obligations under the SWVGU guidelines and will coordinate with external SWVGU staff.

Nature of Work
This position reports directly to the Executive Director of Institutional Advancement. The SWVGU model follows current 6th and 7th graders for seven years. During that time, the Events Coordinator will be responsible for the planning and ultimately, the delivery of on-campus events hosted by New River Community and Technical College with both students and their families as the intended audiences. The Events Coordinator will develop a schedule and build awareness for educational workshops conducted after hours as well as week-long summer camps. Events may be conducted at New River Community and Technical College’s main campus in Beaver, West Virginia; at the Mercer County Campus in Princeton, West Virginia; at the Greenbrier Valley Campus in Lewisburg, West Virginia; or the Advanced Technology Center in Ghent, West Virginia. Scope of work for this position will be limited to the guidelines of the US Department of Education’s GEAR UP program.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Campus Event Coordinator reports to the Executive Director of Institutional Advancement and is responsible for the following:
  • Creating a schedule of events that are age appropriate for targeted SWVGU students or that are appropriate for parents of SWVGU students.
  • Coordinating with College staff to identify presenters for such events.
  • Coordinating with public school staff to schedule events.
  • Plan and oversee summer events. Such events may include, but are not limited to STEM camps, writing camps, career, and technology program camps, etc.
  • Coordinate efforts with SWVGU staff from partnering college.
  • Work with College staff to ensure compliance with GEAR UP program guidelines.
  • Identify external speakers and presenters who are experts in topics related to post-secondary education.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong organizational skills with project management-based competencies, such as excellent oral and written communication skills and time management
  • Comfortable with non-traditional work schedule, which may include evening and weekend events
  • Able to develop professional relationships through excellent interpersonal skills while ensuring accountability
  • Team-oriented and able to build consensus efficiently
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software products; ability to collect data and provide detailed reports
  • Travel required within and outside of assigned region, Valid Driver’s license and reliable transportation necessary
  • Working knowledge of higher education admissions process.
  • Ability to relate to individuals across several age ranges.
  • Serve on local Advisory Councils and other committees to ensure continuous feedback.
  • Coordinate all New River CTC resources including faculty and student tutors as they pertain to SWVGU activities.
  • Engage in community outreach to broaden New River’s footprint to ensure success of the Gear Up Program.
  • Engage with internal and external constituent groups to promote and grow the Gear Up Program
  • Develops collaborative partnerships with business, education, and government entities that are mutually beneficial to the success of the Gear Up Program. 
  • Collaborates with the Office of Communications on marketing and advertising for the program.
