P/T Counselor - Accessibility Services (SEP) Grant Funded

Job Description

This position exists to create, coordinate, evaluate and adapt educational support services to the individual needs of students who have an emotional or mental health challenges. The position also serves as a resource to college faculty and staff in responding to the unique needs of this population group in general and on occasions when disabling conditions may block the successful functioning of the individual and/or the college. The person in this position is a primary resource to the college for managing student behavioral problems and for crisis intervention. Finally, this position exists to explore untested pathways to educational/vocational success for an at-risk group which has traditionally been blocked from participation in the mainstream community.

This position is grant funded and contingent upon the funding associated with the respective grant.

This is a part-time position with a starting rate of $27.23/hr.

 

Principal Accountabilities
  • Provide ongoing academic, personal, and career counseling to students with mental disabilities

 

 
  • Review and interpret confidential medical, psychological and academic reports about individual students’ disabilities, and translate this information in to specific functional limitations within a college setting
 

  • Ensure that each student has a full understanding of their own disability, and how it will impact them in dealing with all aspects of the Sinclair system, including advising on appropriate course load, career options and time management schedule
 

  • Determine and arrange academic support services for each student. Identify adapted educational methods and equipment that will meet each student’s needs
 

  • Teach students to independently secure necessary accommodations throughout the Sinclair system, including effective self-advocacy and training in use of adaptive equipment.
 

  • Monitor student progress as needed serving as advocate and troubleshooter when problems arise. Work with individual faculty regarding academic concerns about students with disabilities to determine alternative methods of testing and instruction
 

  • Provide workshops, and information for secondary personnel, students, parents, faculty and staff to promote an awareness of various disabling conditions and knowledge of available services
 
  • Serve as liaison between students and internal and external resources, i.e., community mental health resources Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities, Access Center for Independent Living, Community Services for the Deaf, Project Mobility, Goodwill Industries, and other community-based specialized agencies. Refer students based on individual needs
  • Contribute to newsletters, presentations publications and other communications to students, faculty and staff
 
  • Offer ongoing support, guidance, and crisis intervention as appropriate to students with mental health disabilities registered with Accessibility Services
 

  • Perform other related duties as assigned or as the need is apparent.

 

Requirements
  • Minimum of a Master’s level degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology or related field required

 

 
  • Minimum of 2 years professional counseling experience required
 

  • State licensure or license eligibility preferred
 

  • Ability to call upon previous experience to recognize mental illness symptoms so as to facilitate appropriate community based services required
 

  • Current working knowledge of Microsoft Office with the ability to learn any databases/programs utilized by Sinclair Community College
 

  • Professional communication skills to include oral and written required
 

  • Ability to effectively relate to a wide range of student, faculty, staff, and professional relationships required
 

  • Ability to effectively utilize evaluative, research and assessment techniques to shape program activities appropriately required
 

  • Ability to facilitate, maintain and update the evolving delivery of educational and student service supports required
 

  • Superior customer service and/or student advocacy as demonstrated through a positive attitude of approachability, adaptability, strong problem-solving and desire to identify and support student success required
 

  • Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously while providing great attention to detail and meeting all prescribed deadlines required
