Postdoctoral Associate- Intestinal Organoids

Baylor College of Medicine

Job Description

Summary

A postdoc position is available at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate interested in intestinal physiology and disease. The laboratory is studying how telomere shortening regulates intestinal regeneration and differentiation and predisposes to inflammation using sophisticated mouse models and mouse/human intestinal organoids. Telomere shortening is a characteristic of many high cell turnover conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative Colitis, Crohns Disease), celiac disease, the aged gut, and children with abnormal short telomeres due to mutations in telomerase, the enzyme that maintains telomeres. Telomere shortening causes intestinal inflammation, but the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. The goal of this NIH-funded project is to identify the underlying mechanisms through which short telomeres predispose patients to intestinal inflammation. The work will cover several exciting novel areas including microbiome-intestinal interaction and metabolomics.

Job Duties

  • Performs animal and cell studies.
  • Collects and organizes data.
  • Acquires the theoretical and practical knowledge in the area of telomere and intestinal biology through reading and working with others.
  • Plans and carries out mouse and cell studies, including analysis of tissues and mouse and human organoids.
  • Carries out mouse studies, including analyzing tissues at the RNA (single cell RNAseq, RT-qPCR), protein (IHC, western blot, proteomics) and structural (electron and scanning microscopy) level.
  • Generates intestinal organoids from mice and patients and performs studies to understand the impact of telomere shortening on intestinal stem cells and differentiated cells.
  • Collects and documents data for presentations and publications.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD or Ph.D. in Basic Science, Health Science, or a related field.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD or MD with sufficient experience in basic science.
  • The ideal candidate would be familiar with intestinal organoid work and have experience using mouse models.
    • Motivated candidates without prior experience in these areas, but strong motivation to learn will be considered. Knowledge of common molecular techniques is required.
  • A proof of excellence through publications in peer-reviewed journals is important.
  • The candidate should be proficient in spoken and written English.
  • The ideal candidate should be curious, self-motivated, and interested in working together with other lab members.
  • Collegiality, respect, and social skills are essential for this position. This position will provide a supportive and highly innovative scientific environment and offer the candidate an excellent opportunity to contribute to a novel and exciting field.
