Responsibilities*

Successful candidates in this position will be enrolled into an accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program that is coordinated by the Department of Pharmacy Services at the University of Michigan Health. Employees in this classification must successfully complete the Pharmacy Technician Training Program within 6-months from date of hire.  The goal is to prepare the trainee for a career as a Pharmacy Technician with the Department of Pharmacy Services.  Upon successful completion of the program, the trainee will be required to pass a national Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination and obtain a Full Pharmacy Technician License.  The individual will be expected to successfully meet all educational requirements, deadlines, and expectations of the program, as determined by the Department of Pharmacy Services.  Upon successful completion of all program requirements and expectations, the trainee will be hired into a Pharmacy Technician Associate position within the Department of Pharmacy Services (minimum 2-year commitment).  Pharmacy Technicians perform activities relating to or supporting the preparation, compounding, packaging, storing, recording, processing, dispensing, labeling and delivery of medications and pharmaceutical supplies under the supervision of a pharmacist, supervisor, or pharmacy resident.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential:

  • Successfully complete education requirements of the Pharmacy Technician Training Program, including, but not limited to, completion of learning modules, learning assessments, examinations, practical demonstrations, and experiential rotations
  • Complete all requirements by the deadlines set by the Department of Pharmacy Services
  • Learn to perform, and then perform, essential functions of a Pharmacy Technician, including but not limited to:
    • Accurately interpret prescriptions and information on medication labels and s
    • Participate in the documentation of patient care activities within the health record
    • Accurately, prepare, compound, and label sterile and non-sterile medications for dispensing
    • Stock and maintain pharmacy inventory
    • Maintains, dispenses, stores all controlled substances and associated records as required
    • Prepare and deliver investigational drugs per research protocols
    • Use of automated dispensing machines and pharmacy workflow systems
    • Participate in audits and inspections which support regulatory and compliance standards
    • Effectively communicate with other pharmacy team members, physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals, health-system employees, patients, families, and visitors
    • Respond to internal and external customers demonstrating service excellence
    • Transport medication safely and securely
    • Collect and/or record metric, quality, and/or surveillance data
    • Performing pharmacy cleaning and documentation
    • Resolve routine medication-related discrepancies and escalate appropriately when necessary
    • Demonstrate service excellence in all interactions with internal and external customers
    • Demonstrate knowledge and adherence to area Policies and Procedures and Operational Guidelines
    • Assist in the inventory management of pharmacy and medical surgical supplies, and equipment
    • Respond to information requests / inquiries
    • Demonstrate proficiency in viewing, interpreting, entering, and accessing information related to medication management within the operational software system in order to perform duties
    • Participate in Patient Safety event reporting
    • Cooperate and participate in area process improvement initiatives
    • Participate in established area productivity tracking activities
    • Other duties as assigned by supervisor or pharmacist to assist with preparation and delivery of patient medications and other patient care needs

The percentage mix of these duties will vary depending on the requirements of the educational program and the work area where the trainee is assigned.

RELATED DUTIES

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Supervision is received from the Pharmacy Technician Training Supervisor; functional supervision in work areas is received from a Pharmacy Supervisor, Pharmacy Manager, Pharmacist, Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, Pharmacy Technician, or other designated official.

Required Qualifications*

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Eligible for licensure as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Michigan Pharmacy, or currently licensed as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Michigan (Temporary License or Full License)
    • If the individual is not licensed, they will be required to obtain a Temporary Pharmacy Technician License on or before the hire date (valid for 1 year and is non-renewable)
    • The individual will then be required to obtain a Full Pharmacy Technician License within 6 months of hire into a Pharmacy Technician Associate position, or before the expiration of the Temporary Pharmacy Technician License (whichever is sooner)
  • Excellent communication skills, including fluency in writing, reading and speaking English
  • Proficient computer skills and literacy, including Windows-based and Microsoft Office-based programs
  • Proficiency in basic mathematic skills relevant to pharmacy technician responsibilitie

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The trainee will be able to perform the assigned duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodations:

  • Ability to work in a stationary position for long periods of time
  • Traveling distances of up to 5 miles per day within the health system
  • Ability to communicate/exchange information
  • Fine motor coordination/dexterity necessary for keyboarding, typing and medication compounding
  • Positioning self to enable movement of inventory
  • Pulling, bending and manual dexterity movements
  • Moving of up to 50 pounds
  • Understand and follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to visualize details at close range in order to perform activities such as transcribing and reading from a screen

Work Schedule

This schedule for this position includes day and evening shift responsibilities, working up to every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday), and possible holiday coverage.
