Job Summary

Under general supervision, The Assistant Professor will prepare and teach courses in fundamental engineering science, and computer and electrical engineering. The faculty member may be assigned to any SLCC location, be required to teach online courses, and may be an assigned alternative work schedules.

Engineering faculty have additional duties as outlined here to support Salt Lake Community College’s role in the State Engineering and Computer Science Initiative.

Several engineering disciplines are housed in the Engineering Department at SLCC. Assigned disciplines include: Civil/Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Materials Science.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Demonstrate a depth of understanding in the field as well as the ability to teach courses in engineering, particularly for electrical and computer engineering.
Effectively prepare and teach assigned courses according to current best practices in student learning for engineering.
Provides each student with a syllabus (paper or online) at the first class meeting that complies with department procedure.
Teaches assigned classes at the scheduled time and place and meets during required contact hours.
Provides appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments.
Promotes development of critical thinking among students.
Actively participates in the update and production of new curriculum development and related activities as a contributing team member of the program area, department, campus, college and state.
Is available to teach courses at times directed by academic needs of the program and availability of staffing pool.
The department recommends final teaching assignments with final decision by the Academic Administrator.
Assists in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment. Prepares and submits incident reports to Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy. 
Responds to voicemail and email communication promptly (generally within 1?2 contract days).
Meets deadlines.
Maintains professional appearance as defined by the discipline and/or College procedure.
Partners with the college to provide innovation to improve the learning environment.
Promotes support for the mission, vision, values and goals of the College by incorporating culturally? competent pedagogy and inclusivity practices.
Maintains and posts teaching schedule. Maintains significant campus presence to respond to instruction and daily needs of students, departments, college and community. Meets with students outside of class—a minimum of 5 hours/week in person or on?line.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued

Attends Convocation, Professional Development Day, Commencement and other institutional meetings (e.g. department meetings)

Completes all required trainings as required by the College.

Serve on Department, Division, School, and/or College committees as needed to assist in policy development, curriculum development, procedures, or other matters that benefit the Department, Division, School, or College.

Provides service to the institution through appropriate participation in academic and campus committee assignments; offers adequate service on at least one department, school, or college?wide committee.

Knows and enforces FERPA guidelines and other pertinent federal regulations.

Pursue professional development activities and research that maintain personal expertise, contribute to teaching efforts, student success, and department interests.

Minimum Qualifications

Masters Degree in electrical/computer engineering (or verification of completion of degree requirements by the time of employment) or a closely related discipline from an accredited college or university. Teaching experience in college level engineering at the secondary or collegiate level.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in electrical or computer engineering preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Highly successful background teaching introductory courses in engineering including those specific to electrical and computer engineering including experience teaching digital circuits and FPGAs, circuit analysis, linear circuits devices, and Matlab or other computational software.

Experience with curriculum development.

Experience with designing and implementing laboratory activities.

Evidence of successful participation in college and department activities.

Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, culture, ethnic background, and abilities, to maintain good working relationships across the College. The ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
