Trail Development Intern

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy

Job Description

This position is located in our Washington, D.C., National Headquarters and is eligible for a remote or hybrid work schedule in accordance with RTC’s policies. A hybrid schedule is preferred (working 1–2 days per week in the D.C. office). Proof of vaccination is required for all staff.

Job Duties

The Trail Development Intern will assist the Project Manager, Great American Rail-Trail, and the Manager of Trail Resources with the following tasks:

  • Partner meetings – Support administration of virtual statewide stakeholder meetings for partners along the Great American Rail-Trail, including technical support, preparing agendas, and note-taking
  • Gap tracking – Create a system to help track one-on-one meetings with partners; update information on the status of gaps along the Great American Rail-Trail
  • On-road detours – Research official partner-identified on-road detours for sections of the Great American Rail-Trail
  • Corridor status – Research the status of railroad corridors along the route of the Great American Rail Trail
  • Other duties assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Basic Qualifications and Personal Attributes

RTC is seeking an undergraduate or graduate student working toward a degree in planning, public policy, social sciences, natural resources, or a related field. Applicants should be highly organized, able to work independently and manage time efficiently and possess a strong interest in the topics of health, the environment, sustainable transportation, pedestrian issues, bicycling, or trails.

Proficiency with Microsoft Suite is required, and familiarity with ArcGIS Online is preferred. Candidates should have strong organizational and writing skills.

Work Environment

Normal office setting with low to moderate noise level.
