Research Associate

Northeastern University

Job Description

About the Opportunity

Responsibilities:

Northeastern Lab for Inclusive Entrepreneurship invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate position focused on the project, “Promoting Supplier Diversity in Higher Education Institutions,” which aims to better understand what systems and structures in higher education institutions (HEIs) are needed to promote procurement from diverse-owned small businesses (DOSBs) and sustain their entrepreneurship, particularly in the COVID-19 era.
Key tasks include primary and secondary research activities such as qualitative research (e.g., survey, interview, and focus group) engaging HEI procurement or contract officers and DOSB founders or chief management officers, literature reviews, and analytical writing. While research is a primary responsibility for this position, secondary responsibilities may include some level of administrative assistance for the Lab operation. This is a one-year, grant-funded appointment (fiscal year 2022) with the potential for renewal based on continued funding and satisfactory performance. The position is full-time and benefits-eligible.
We are seeking candidates with research experience and interests aligned closely with Northeastern Lab for Inclusive Entrepreneurship: https://nl4ie.sites.northeastern.edu/ . As a University Center designated by the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA), the Lab is assisting small businesses, particularly ones located in Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island, through the provision of technical/managerial assistance and the Inclusive Entrepreneur Fellows program. In addition to the five-year EDA grant, the Lab was recently awarded the three-year Knowledge Challenge grant from the Kauffman Foundation to address supplier diversity issues in HEIs.

Applicants must have completed a doctorate in Education, Business, Economics, Public Policy, or another related Social Science discipline. We expect the applications of the strongest candidates to describe how their research interests and experience align with studying the interplay of HEIs and DOSBs, and in particular the DOSB opportunities or barriers to the HEI procurement market. The salary is competitive with other postdoctoral programs, and postdoctoral research associates have access to university health care plans. The associate will be situated in Northeastern Lab for Inclusive Entrepreneurship and have access to the broader scholarly resources of Northeastern University.

Qualifications:

A Doctoral degree in Education, Business, Economics, Public Policy, or a related field is required by the appointment start date. We seek a social scientist with training and research experience related to HEI procurement practices (particularly, supplier diversity programs), business research, and the education ecosystem, with the ability to undertake substantially full-time research or scholarship under the supervision of the principal investigator (PI) and co-PIs. The ideal candidate will have experience in qualitative research and demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills. Proficiency in MS Office suite (e.g., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), survey and analysis tools (e.g., Qualtrics and NVivo), and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau) is required. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, attention to details, as well as experience in writing papers/reports and project management, are essential.

To apply, please upload as a single PDF: (1) 1-page cover letter describing your qualifications, research interests, and your fit with the position; (2) CV; (3) contact information for 3 professional references (please include name, title, email, and relationship to you); and (4) 1 representative (professional or academic) publication.

The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal. Start date is flexible but ASAP is preferred. Review of applications will start immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Questions should be addressed to y.ryu@northeastern.edu .
