About University at Albany:

The University at Albany is currently conducting a large cluster hire of 26 faculty positions in the broad area of artificial intelligence. These positions span the campus to include eight Schools and Colleges in 20 departments. In addition, the recruitment of a Director of the UAlbany Institute for Artificial Intelligence is underway. 


Job Description:

The University at Albany, State University of New York, seeks an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in mathematics related to data science and AI. The new hire will be a member of the UAlbany AI Institute . The successful candidate will provide evidence of expertise in AI and address how AI is integral to their research program. 

An Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is expected to perform the following duties during their employment with the department:

  • Research: publish original research in professional journals, present research results at professional meetings, seek external funding to support their research, and supervise the research of Ph.D. students. 
  • Teaching: teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. 
  • Service: advise undergraduate majors, serve on various departmental committees, and participate in certain activities of the profession (such as refereeing papers and reviewing grant proposals). 


Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • A Ph.D. in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, or a related field, from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization by May 2023. 
  • Applicants with degrees outside of mathematics, applied mathematics, or statistics (e.g., operations research, electrical engineering, computer science or physics) are also encouraged to apply but must demonstrate a strong record in doing research in mathematics related to data science and AI. 
  • Applicants must address in their application their ability to work with a culturally diverse population.
  • Applicants must demonstrate evidence of artificial intelligence in their existing research program.
  • A demonstrated potential for research in mathematics related to data science and AI
  • Applicants must address their plan and ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses
  • Applicants must have a demonstrated strong potential for seeking external funding for their research.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a potential in interdisciplinary research and contribute to the university's AI initiative

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • A record of research in mathematics related to data science and AI
  • Experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses
  • Demonstrated experience in applying for and obtaining external funding.
  • 1-2+ years of postdoctoral experience
  • Demonstrated potential for collaboration with the existing machine learning and topological data analysis groups and to complement their expertise.
