UCSD Health Sciences is a $1 billion dollar plus organization encompassing 16 academic departments (14 clinical, 2 basic sciences), 2 pre-academic/hospital departments, 2 professional schools (School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences), 2 hospitals, and various other programs and units all dedicated towards fulfilling the Health Sciences missions. The UCSD Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM) is one of two basic science units in the School of Medicine where world-class researchers study fundamental cellular processes and pathways using a variety of techniques from classical genetics and fluorescence microscopy to high-throughput genomics, systems biology, and crystallography. Our 36 faculty and over 200 postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and research staff work on the cutting edge of biology, cutting across fields from basic biochemistry and genetics to genomics, systems biology and stem cell biology. The faculty also play a major role in medical and graduate student training, providing educational and programmatic offerings that span several disciplines and provide diversity to meet the interests of a broad spectrum of students and scholars. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and in conjunction with researchers in the laboratory, the Laboratory Researcher will execute experimental protocols related to studies of lysosomal storage diseases; isolate and purify glycans from cells and tissues; perform confocal microscopy experiments; perform solid phase ELISA type assays; culture mammalian cells; perform mouse husbandry; extract DNA and perform PCR analysis; and prepare buffers and solutions as needed. Duties also require working with outside vendors and liaise with large drug companies.

  • Theoretical knowledge in biology and chemistry as typically acquired by a bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and confidence in handling microliter amounts of solutions in a sterile manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize to optimize performance of tasks.

  • Proven ability to carry out new experimental procedures with accuracy and efficiency.

  • Proven skill and ability to keep accurate data.

  • Good organizational skills to order and maintain chemical supplies

  • Ability to properly use and maintain laboratory equipment.

  • Ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in the operation of a personal computer, including MS Word, Excel, and Prism or equivalent statistical program.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in basic math for maintaining ledgers.

  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research. Demonstrated willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles.

  • Demonstrated ability to follow step wise experimental protocols.

  • Experience with cataloging and inventory.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including tact maturity, professionalism, and flexibility. Proven ability to work independently and/or in a team framework in conjunction with principles of community and in a lab environment that includes and interacts with a large group of diverse individuals.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

  • Must be willing to work with biohazardous materials.

  • Must be willing to work with rodents and cultured cells.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
