Department Summary

The Ballmer Institute for Children's Behavioral Health, based in Portland, Oregon, establishes a new national model for behavioral health care by uniting the University of Oregon's nationally recognized research programs in education, psychology, prevention science, Oregon public schools and families, and community support groups in the creation and delivery of promotion, prevention, and intervention programs that can be part of the daily lives of children and adolescents. This groundbreaking initiative was announced on March 1, 2022, and made possible by the extraordinary gift of more than $425 million from Connie and Steve Ballmer, co-founders of Ballmer Group Philanthropy. The Institute will serve youth K-12 while prioritizing the needs of children, adolescents, and families who have been persistently and/or historically underserved.

Position Summary

The Ballmer Institute and UO Athletics Post-Doctoral Traineeship blends clinical experience serving traditional college-age student and student-athlete populations with mental health research training activities in collaboration with Dr. Maureen Zalewski, who is both a psychology and Ballmer Institute faculty. Dr. Zalewski’s program of research focuses on dialectical behavior therapy, suicide risk, developmental psychopathology, and emotion dysregulation. Clinical activities will focus on the direct delivery of evidence-informed behavioral health promotion, prevention, and intervention methods (50% time). If desired, candidates will receive supervision as an OR psychology resident in order to secure licensure. The other half of the position is research (50% time) and includes activities such as data analysis and manuscript preparation from existing datasets, grant preparation and submissions, and overseeing the implementation and delivery of clinical research protocols.

Additional activities may include coordinating and collaborating with UO Athletics and Dr. Maureen Zalewski on teaching, training, and technical assistance projects. Opportunities for teaching in the Ballmer Institute academic programs and other relevant university and professional service activities are also possible.

Our commitment is to provide a comprehensive training opportunity where the post-doctoral trainee acquires advanced competencies in both clinical and research activities. This position works closely and will be jointly mentored by the behavioral health services director for the University of Oregon Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, as well as Dr. Maureen Zalewski.

This position is a limited-duration postdoctoral appointment potentially renewable for up to a total of four years.
