At the entry level , duties are limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals and are performed in a training and development capacity. At the intermediate level , duties are less limited in scope and are performed independently with occasional guidance and direction from other professionals.

Nature of Work

Information Science Professionals utilize applied or computational mathematical analyses for a wide array of different applications and to solve complex problems. Experiments may include text interpretation, coding, ground theory methodology for the analysis of certain data, and quantum state analyses. Information Science Professionals may also perform duties in labs that use primarily electronic equipment.

This Information Science Professional will be operating as a BioData Scientist for the Way Lab at the University of Colorado Denver l Anschutz Medical Campus. The new scientist will join a highly interactive, supportive, and interdisciplinary group of faculty, staff scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and students in The Center for Health Artificial Intelligence (AI), and they will enjoy access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities on the Anschutz Medical Campus.

The Way Lab's mission is to integrate high-dimensional biomedical data into clinical decision-making and drug discovery. We are biologists who use data science to reduce human suffering. We develop and validate analytical methods, novel approaches, and write open source software for the biology community. We aim to improve patient treatment strategies, discover biological mechanisms, and enable computational reproducibility with open-source software. The BioData Scientist will play an important role in advancing this mission by analyzing multimodal data types (microscopy images, RNAseq, CRISPR screens, etc.) with statistics and machine learning. They will contribute to our open-source software tech stack located at https://github.com/WayScience.

The candidate will have the opportunity to analyze multi-modal data types, test hypotheses from these data, present their work in publications and conferences, and collaborate with diverse scientific teams.

The candidate will use open-source software (e.g. pandas, scikit-learn, scipy, tidyverse, ggplot2, etc.), and also work closely with other Way Lab team members to apply new, locally developed tools and software based on deep learning. The candidate will produce reproducible analysis pipelines that apply statistics and advanced machine learning to test specific hypotheses related to the project’s disease focus (e.g., leukemia, other cancers, neurofibromatosis type 1, heart failure, etc.). They will learn best practices for data analysis, troubleshooting, quality control, and experimental design. They will use their biology and computer science background to interpret quantitative results and test hypotheses. They are also expected to contribute to the lab's overall culture of creativity, integrity, courage, and openness. A successful hire will likely have a personality that is professional, organized, and goal-oriented, who can juggle multiple projects and can effectively design and meet project deliverables.
