Sequoias Community College District is seeking an equity-minded candidate to fill a full-time, temporary position in the Ethnic Studies Department beginning August 2023.

Job Duties

• Provide face-to-face academic instruction to students in American Indian Studies and/or Asian American Studies, and the Introduction to Ethnic Studies and Social Justice Studies courses.
• Use varied learning and teaching methods appropriate for community college students.
• Assess student performance and progress through various course assignments.
• Perform related teaching duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities related to enrollment, attendance, and student drops.
• Refer students to appropriate support services, programs, and/or resources as needed.
• Contribute to the development and growth of the Ethnic Studies Department and to the growth of its Associate Degree for Transfer.
• Regularly collaborate with Ethnic Studies faculty to assess and revise measurable student performance indicators for collecting and reporting data on Student Learning Outcomes as needed for each course.
• Collaborate on department initiatives, program review, program and student learning outcomes development, and assessment to improve student learning.
• Satisfy faculty professional responsibilities including professional development.

Assignments may include evening classes, hybrid/online, and teaching at any of the Sequoias Community College District campuses: Visalia, Hanford and/or Tulare. Participation in the governance of the Sequoias Community College District by way of committee assignments is encouraged.

Other responsibilities include maintenance of office hours, participation in department and/or division responsibilities, and the willingness to create and participate in and sustain an atmosphere of equity, which is respectful of diversity Districtwide.

Qualifications
The candidate must meet the following criteria:

• Master's in Native American Studies/American Indian Studies; OR
• Master's in the Ethnic Studies field; OR
• A master's in American Studies/Ethnicity, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Central American Studies, Latin American Studies, Cross Cultural Studies, Race and Ethnic Relations, Asian-American Studies, or African-American Studies; OR
• The equivalent; OR
• Interdisciplinary Studies.
• (NOTE: The Interdisciplinary Studies discipline is provided to allow for those cases where it is locally determined that a course must be taught by someone with qualifications that exceed a single discipline. The constituent disciplines can include any disciplines found in the Master's List.)

AND

• Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, which pursuant to Title 5 53022, is a core system competency and job requirement.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• Proven capacity to teach Ethnic Studies courses, particularly in American Indian Studies and/or Asian American Studies, with an antiracist, interdisciplinary, intersectional , and culturally responsive approach with students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, experiences, and identities, including underprepared and non-traditional students.
• Specialization in one or more of the following, American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, and/or Ethnic Studies.
• Commitment to creating positive racially conscious intellectual spaces and providing support for students of color, women, LGBTQIA and historically marginalized groups, through teaching and advocacy.
• Evidence of an ongoing pedagogical and professional dedication to anti-racism, equity, inclusion, community organizing, and social justice.
• Create student service-learning outcomes to apply classroom learning through civic engagement assignments that service the college and/or the greater community.
• Understand the importance of individual and collective accountability as educators and as institution of higher education to engage in practices for closing equity gaps.
• Reframe inequities as a problem of practice while working collegially and collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and community members to enhance student and institutional success.
