Position Overview

The University of Kansas Institute for Sustainable Engineering is seeking a well-qualified post-doctoral research associate to work on an industry supported project that is focused in the area of separations and thermodynamic measurements. The successful candidate should possess excellent experimental and analytical skills as well as strong oral and written communication abilities.

This is a one-year limited term position. Position is located on-site at the Lawrence campus. U.S. work authorization is required prior to candidate's start date.


Job Description

Specific duties for the position are as follows:

  • Perform experimental measurements with state-of-the-art instrumentation, including but not limited: to gravimetric microbalances, volumetric view cells, high-pressure VLE and LLE apparatus, high-pressure density, viscosity apparatus, GC-MS, ICP-OES, potentiometric titrations, optical microscopy, and dynamic light scattering
  • Design and construct new laboratory experiments with a specific focus on VLE and LLE measurements and separations
  • Present oral and written technical results to industry partners to convey scientific progress
  • Assist in writing grant proposals to achieve funding goals for future research
  • Train new graduate students and research personnel on experimental methods
  • Mentor and train undergraduate students conducting research projects
  • Manage adjacent seed projects with undergraduate researchers
  • Assist with undergraduate teaching and grading

  • 60% Research

     - Design and execution of experiments. These duties include carrying out original research relative to the laboratory mission. Perform experiments on an individual basis that pertain to current research topics in the department.

    20% Reporting - Write reports and papers. Writes technical reports and scientific papers for peer reviewed journals. Additional responsibilities include assisting in the preparation grants/contracts and proposals for federal, state and charitable organizations and industrial clients.

    15% Collaboration - Assist other laboratory members with experiments. Assist the principal investigator to provide experimental and technical supervision of one or more technicians, graduate student and/or post-doctoral researchers and/or fellows.

    5% Laboratory protocol - Routine lab management. Ensuring systems are in place for efficient planning of lab supplies, records, and document management as well as experimental protocols and data, and coordination of good lab practices and lab safety.


    Required Qualifications

  • PhD in chemical engineering, physical chemistry, mechanical engineering, physics, or related fields
  • Demonstrated experience in moderate and high-pressure experiments
  • Demonstrated experience with sampling and GC analysis
  • Demonstrated experience in thermodynamics
  • NOTE: To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the PhD conferred at the time of hire.  Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an interim basis not to exceed 6-months. Upon verification of degree the appointment will be extended to its full duration.

    Advertised Salary Range

    $60,000 - $64,000 based on experience
