THE BIODISCOVERY INSTITUTE was established in 2016 as an Institute of Research Excellence at the University of North Texas under the Division of Research and Innovation. The BioDiscovery Institute delivers fundamental research solutions to underpin the utilization of living systems for the production of polymers, oils and additives, chemical feedstocks, composite materials, proteins and other macromolecules, bioactive molecules, and even bio-based fuels. Researchers in the institute operate through pipelines that link sustainable production platforms, metabolic engineering, and the development of new products and technologies. The institute touts a multidisciplinary team of scientists committed to collaborating on large research projects with an emphasis on solutions to societal needs.

Position Summary
A postdoctoral position is available in the Kent Chapman Laboratory (in the UNT BioDiscovery Institute) to reconstruct fungal natural product pathways into plant systems. This project is a collaboration with the Liz Skellam and Ana Alonso laboratories as well as the UNT Economic Research Center led by Mike Carroll. The postdoctoral candidate will be expected to perform cloning and expression experiments to support metabolite production and purification from plant leaves, and to optimize this process for greenhouse production of medically-relevant chemicals. The project is currently funded by a grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation; the initial appointment will be for one year with an option to continue for up to two years depending upon satisfactory progress and continued availability of funds.
Minimum Qualifications
Education Required:
  • Doctorate in plant science, biochemistry, biology, or related field.

Prior Experience Required:
  • At least three years of experience in the field of plant biochemistry and/or metabolism with publications demonstrating the active contribution of the candidate to this field of study
  • Prior experience with molecular cloning, microscopy and plant biochemistry techniques is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior Experience Highly Desired:
  • Prior experience with metabolic engineering, metabolic pathway and enzyme elucidation, and production of metabolites in plant and/or microbial platforms is highly desired.
  • Strong scientific writing and communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
