Overview: 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

 

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Accelerator Physics Group in the Research Accelerator Division (RAD), Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  The qualified candidate will study beam transport and beam dynamics for high intensity beams, for the SNS superconducting linac and SNS Ring. The qualified candidate will also be expected to contribute to the development of simulation models to account for various mechanisms of beam loss and implement software to control the SNS accelerator in real time.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct beam studies on the SNS 1.4 MW beam to calibrate simulations and validate predictions
  • Research beam loss mechanisms in the SNS superconducting linac including Intra Beam Stripping
  • Develop simulation models of beam loss using pyORBIT code
  • Develop and operate Control Room software for SNS accelerator tuning and monitoring
  • Participate in scientific conferences, workshops, meetings and publishes results in the form of SNS technical notes and memos, workshop and conference proceedings, and scientific journals

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Physics or a related field completed within the last 5 years
  • Programming experience in Python, or other object-oriented language

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with modern programming languages (C++/Java), version control system (Git) and software development practices including code design, documentation, testing etc.
  • Working knowledge of Linux command line
  • Experience working with an accelerator, such as experience working in a control room, conducting accelerator-based experiments, and performing accelerator simulations
  • Familiarity with EPICS - accelerator control software
  • Experience with pyORBIT or other Particle-In-Cell codes
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate research results through reports, publications, and presentations.
