Position Summary
The Grants Financial Manager is responsible for the full life cycle of research administration from proposal development to post award administration and compliance. The Grants Financial Manager will be the primary financial and budget point of contact and support for government-funded principal investigators (PIs) in the Museum’s Sciences Divisions. Reporting to the Director of Government Grants, the Grants Financial Manager will collaborate with PIs and administrators as well as staff from other Museum departments (Finance, Budget, Legal, Inst. Advancement) to provide essential support to the operation of a research project. This process will encompass a variety of tasks, including assisting with proposal budget development, proposal review and submission, post-award financial management, funds monitoring, account reconciliation and reporting. In addition, the Grants Financial Manager will support the Director in facilitating and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and Museum regulations pertaining to research administration, including human and animal research subjects, financial conflict of interest, export control regulations, foreign influence mitigation, and other areas.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Pre-award: Develop budgets and budget narratives sufficient to support project or program activities and consistent with applicable requirements. Assist PIs in drafting, writing and editing proposal budgets and related documents. Review final proposals to ensure commitments (both fiscal and technical) and accountability are in accordance with Museum and sponsor policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Post-award: Collaborate with Finance to ensure awards are set up properly and cost sharing requirements are fulfilled; review and approve expenditures, prepare forecasts and make recommendations on staffing and spending changes to keep projects on track; advise on purchasing and travel policies; monitor project expenditures; assist in managing PI effort commitments and advise on quarterly effort certifications; participate in award closeout process; compile information for final reports and certificates.
  • Compliance: Work closely with the Director to interpret and apply principles, rules, regulations, policies, precedents or other guidelines specific to research projects and sponsors to resolve problems, answer questions and provide information and advice. Provide consultation and management to ensure that PIs have assistance with obtaining all required compliance approvals (e.g. IRB, FCOI, RCR, export controls, foreign engagement or influence reviews).


The expected salary range for the Grants Financial Manager is $75,000 – 80,000. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 5 years experience in nonprofit and federal grant budget and project management.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced management degree (MPA, MBA).
  • Familiarity with non-profit financial practices and systems.
