Organizational Overview

The RIKEN BNL Research Center (RBRC) was established in 1997 dedicated to the science explored by the experimental programs at BNL such as heavy-ion collisions and cold QCD physics. Under the current director Hideto Enyo, the Center consists of the experimental group led by Yasuyuki Akiba, the theory group led by Yoshitaka Hatta and the computing group led by Taku Izubuchi.

Position Description

The theory group of RBRC has an opening for a research associate starting between February 2023 and October 2023. In this role you will work under the direction of Yoshitaka Hatta, Group leader of the theory group, and conduct theoretical research in topics related to the sPHENIX and Electron-Ion Collider experiments at BNL. The position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform research on high energy hadron (nucleus) collisions, nucleon structure
  • Organize and participate in seminars, meetings, and workshops
  • Publish research results and conduct presentations at meetings and conferences

Position Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD degree in Theoretical Nuclear or Elementary Particle Physics, or related field
  • Solid background in field theory and practical computational skills in quantum chromodynamics (QCD)
  • Ability to prepare and deliver oral presentations, as well as write articles in scientific journals
  • Clear and concise verbal/written/presentation communication skills

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with hadron (nucleus) structure physics

Other Information:

  • BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.
