Postdoctoral fellow

Job Description

Postdoctoral positions are available in the Neurobiology Department/Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind at UC San Diego to investigate the extent and molecular regulation of neurotransmitter switching throughout the brain. Transmitter switching is a form of plasticity involving the gain of one neurotransmitter and the loss of another in the same neuron in response to sustained stimulation. It often changes the sign of the synapse, from excitatory to inhibitory or vice versa, and drastically shifts behavior. The Spitzer lab is recruiting postdoctoral fellows to determine the scope of transmitter switching across brain regions in response to single environmental stimuli and to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms that promote and modulate transmitter switching. Our research involves the use of genetic labeling to identify transmitter-switched neurons in cleared mouse brains, analyzing the molecular basis of transmitter switching, and testing non-invasive manipulations of electrical activity to drive or reverse transmitter switches.

Qualifications

Highly motivated and creative candidates with a PhD or MD/PhD in biomedical sciences, a strong academic record and experience in cellular and molecular neurobiology are encouraged to apply. Expertise in using genetic mouse models, viral vectors, optogenetic and chemogenetic tools is advantageous. Prior experience with whole brain imaging and analysis or non-invasive brain stimulation is a plus.

Application

Applicants should send a single pdf that includes a brief cover letter describing research experience, interests and career goals, their CV, and contact information for three references to nspitzer@ucsd.edu . Salary will be commensurate with experience and funded by multiyear federal grants. Positions are available immediately and applications will be considered on an ongoing basis until they are filled.
