Position Summary

The Vice President of Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (REDI) is a visionary strategist with exceptional skills of influence and execution to lead the Public Health Institute (PHI) in its mission-critical work of integrating REDI principles into our culture, operations, research, and in the programs we support. The candidate will work closely with internal teams and leaders across all functional areas of the organization to bring our collective REDI vision to life. The Vice President of Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion will report to the President and CEO.

Full salary range for this position: $166,744 to $262,955 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is from $166,744 (minimum) to $214,850 (midpoint), based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the President and CEO, Board of Directors, and Senior Management Team as a senior advisor, guiding the overall strategic vision for Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at PHI.
  • Champion cultural transformation and build senior management capacity to enable the REDI vision across the organization. Work collaboratively to develop and communicate long term REDI strategy, manage annual action plans, monitor progress, and report on performance.
  • Work closely with the senior management team to align PHI’s REDI approach to business and operational strategies.
  • Acquire and leverage deep knowledge about leading and emerging research, best practices, and equity-focused approaches that support PHI’s REDI goals and strategies.
  • Work closely with the Senior Vice President of Human Resources to integrate REDI principles into core talent acquisition strategy, retention strategy, and all human resources processes and systems. Advise on equity-related compliance considerations.
  • Develop and champion PHI’s overall REDI learning strategy. Lead the design of internal learning experiences, conferences, and other opportunities to expand the knowledge capacity of PHI staff on relevant topics around racial equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Develop a process to incorporate REDI responsibilities into professional development and performance plans.
  • Coordinate with staff to elevate the Public Health Equity Fellowship Program.
  • Work with staff to incorporate a REDI lens into communication strategies, social media, website, publications, and photography.
  • In partnership with the senior management team, design a process to increase the capture and use of data and insights related to race, ethnicity, and other dimensions of diversity and to integrate a REDI lens into PHI’s research strategy. Develop evidence-based, data-driven solutions and targeted interventions to progress REDI initiatives.
  • Manage budget resources assigned to the Office of Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion including providing support for the REDI Work Group and other workforce initiatives.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts from within the PHI ecosystem to deepen our collective understanding and approach to racial equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Provide leadership and support to Principal Investigators and Program Directors (PI/PDs) to integrate racial equity and health equity principles into their programs and research.
  • Cultivate an extensive partnership network with key leaders within PHI, the public health community, and racial justice organizations to establish and deepen partnerships both regionally and nationally.
  • Establish PHI as a thought leader in racial equity and public health through speaking and writing internally within PHI and externally at conferences, workshops, and related gatherings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least 15 years of related experience, including 10 years of experience in a management position.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Social Justice, Organizational Development, Business Administration, Industrial & Organizational Psychology, or related field required, or substitute with 4 additional years of related experience.

Other Qualifications

  • Substantive knowledge of frameworks, tools, and methods that help to understand and address systemic and structural inequity as it manifests in the workplace and in public health work.
  • Extensive understanding of diversity at the intersections of race, color, national origin, culture, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, language, socioeconomic status, and other dimensions.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and workgroups, developing trust and collaboration between all levels of staff.
  • Substantive knowledge of health equity and approaches to reduce health disparities and inequality.
  • Experience leading organizational change management processes in complex organizations.
  • Experience in programmatic and business/operations functions in a public health organization or other nonprofit.
  • Master’s degree or certification in a related field preferred.

PHI WORKFORCE MANDATORY COVID-19 VACCINATION POLICY

Per the PHI Workforce Mandatory COVID-19 Vaccination Policy, it is a condition of employment for all domestic based employees to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, unless they are granted a reasonable accommodation under applicable law.
