Communities In Schools of Memphis is part of the nation’s largest and most effective dropout prevention organization, empowering students to succeed in school and achieve in life. Job Summary
The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for ensuring strong overall management and sustainability of the agency through strong internal operations, successful resource development and community building strategies, and effective program management to ensure implementation of the Communities In Schools (CIS) model of integrated student supports. The Chief Executive Officer reports to the Communities In Schools of Memphis Board of Directors and works with board members to execute membership, fundraising initiatives and serves as liaison to community service partners and other organizations. The Executive Director is also responsible for maintaining a strong working relationship with the state office, other local affiliates, local school districts, and other city and county stakeholders. The Chief Executive Officer also ensures the agency’s adherence to National CIS Total Quality Standards.

The following are main areas of responsibilities with major job duties identified.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Agency Management

Daily Operations
Responsible for managing all activities and decisions regarding daily operations and office functions ensuring compliance with local, state and federal laws for a tax exempt non-profit corporation. Assist in the formulation/revision of policies with the Board of Directors and oversee the development of appropriate procedures for the effective execution of the approved policies. Responsible for developing an annual operations plan to ensure progress towards the board developed strategic goals. Build trust and uphold the agency’s reputation in the community and ensure accountability to the mission and agency’s core values. Any other duties and responsibilities relating to the agency or operations as identified and directed by the board.

Board Relations
Report directly to the board and work closely with the Board Chair to ensure agency effectiveness. Assist with recruitment/engagement of board members. Help to plan board and committee meeting agendas and work with individual board members and committees to ensure that all board members understand the mission and goals of CIS
Memphis. Responsible for supporting board strategic planning processes; keep board apprised of current program and community building efforts; engage them with resource development strategies, and provide sufficient information for them to fulfill policy and fiduciary responsibilities.

Financial Management
Work closely with the board Finance Chair to develop/oversee the financial management system to ensure appropriate fiscal controls. Responsible for operating within approved fiscal policies and procedures, develop an annual budget for board approval, produce financial reports and continuously monitor expenses and revenues compared to the budget.

Provide the Finance Chair and board with timely updates including unplanned changes in the agency’s financial outlook.
Ensure the completion of an annual independent audit.

2. Resource Development and Community Building

Resource Development
Responsible for the design and implementation of a multi-year resource development plan which accesses diversified funding sources and ensures sufficient resources to develop and maintain necessary infrastructure, as well as secure and retain highly qualified service delivery staff to sustain and expand services. Prepare/oversee grant proposals and reports to funders. Lead and coordinate all agency resource development efforts by leveraging board and staff support as appropriate for each activity.

Community Engagement and Leadership
Responsible for providing or coordinating all outreach efforts and presentations as the primary liaison to community, establishing a sound working relationship with business, education, legislative and social service groups. Provide annual evaluation outcomes and indicators for dissemination to the community.

3. Program Management

Service Delivery Coordination
Responsible for understanding the CIS model and guiding the delivery of integrated student supports in local schools.
Maintain awareness of identified needs to ensure services are targeted and community resources are leveraged. Provide program management oversight and ensure site coordinators are supported by school leadership through strong communication and periodic site visits. Implement program evaluation measures with ongoing assessments to determine program effectiveness and identify needed changes to increase impact. Provide required reports to CIS state and national organizations specific to TQS requirements.

Staff Supervision
Responsible for all facets of training, supervision, ongoing development and evaluation of agency staff. Ensure the development of human resource policies and procedures and operate within approved policies and procedures as well as compliance with employment laws. Implement effective staff support strategies and build productive relationships based on mutual respect and open communication resulting in strong team cohesion.

Relationship with School Districts
Responsible for developing strong relationships with school district leaders to ensure mutually beneficial partnerships, negotiate district contracts to ensure sustainable growth, and maintain communication regarding service delivery to ensure satisfactory progress with contract deliverables.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Master’s Degree in public administration, social work or related field preferred).
  • Minimum of five years’ experience with increasing levels of manager or director responsibility with a non-profit or similar organization.
  • Proven successful experience with resource development or external partnership building to build out new revenue streams.
  • Minimum of five years supervision experience with direct reports; providing ongoing oversight, training and support.
  • Proven successful staff professional development and program development to increase employee satisfaction and retention and improve program delivery.
  • Experience with professional writing to include grants, reports, and marketing materials.
  • Experience/familiarity working with public/private social service providers and/or schools.
  • General understanding of the non-profit sector and previous work with a nonprofit Board.

  • Proven leadership skills with ability to encourage and support others’ effort towards mutual goals.
  • Ability to make independent decisions with available information and maintain strong organizational communication.
  • Understands basic resource development strategies and adept at initiating relationships; comfortable making community presentations and connecting with individuals in large and small group settings.
  • Proven strong written and oral communication skills; professional writing shows strong organization skills and clear articulation of thoughts.
  • Comfortable with technology and capacity to learn additional software applications.
  • Comfortable working with numbers; understands budgets and basic program evaluations.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in a leadership role with a non-profit agency, working with a board of directors.
  • Board development and coaching experience.
  • Program management or direct service experience working with vulnerable populations.
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the diverse needs of youth and families served; dedicated to equity and social justice.
  • Experience converting big strategic goals into incremental milestones.
  • Experience developing successful staff onboarding and professional development programs.
  • Knowledge of and established connections to the local business and/or funding community.
  • Demonstrated experience diversifying funding streams, particularly with individual donors.
  • Familiar with local social service agencies; awareness of formal and informal community resources.
  • Understanding of the public education system and affiliated complicated political systems.

Pay: $155,000.00 - $200,000.00 per year
